Chances for Schools? Thx!

Hey. I posted this on the Princeton thread because i was sort of nervous about having applied, and i was wondering what u guys in this thread thought too about my chances. In case I don't get into Princeton Early, i was wondering what my chances may be for other schools so i can try to make a more "realistic" list of schools. thx!

numbers are all low. weighted GPA is useless info. what is your approximate rank? have you gotten a b or a c in high school?

nothing spectacular. remember that you are competing with thousand of asian applicants with all state orchestra and much higher numbers and many more achievements in math/sciences. as for your research, i really don't know how prestigious is simply "applied to" intel, siemens, etc

defer and then reject

i have 2 B+s in like stupid classes, but other than that its all As and A+s. our school doesn't rank and gives gpa as weighted. as for the research, apparently i dont believe that winning many competitions is that much better than the experience i got through doing research. If i do win, that's even better, but im not relying on that too much, and im sure my mentor will write about how much contribution i made to her own research and how i value the real-life research experience i got more (which i also conveyed in my essay). uh yea im perfectly aware of the asian candidates who probably got all-state and whatnot. But for music, im relying on the chamber music passion i built to sort of make me stand out. i even put a work of chamber music my group did in my recording, along with my solo works. the recommendation for music is also really amazing, and so are the other recs. Are my numbers THAT low? i appreciate ur effort to evaluate me. thx!

pretty low.
whats your rank?

my school doesnt rank. wow the "what are my chances" thread is much harsher than the other threads ive been in LOL. but i still appreciate ur honesty lol.

Princeton ED - Big Reach
Columbia - Reach
Yale - Big Reach
Brown - Reach
MIT - Big Reach
Cornell - Match
Williams - Slight Reach
JHU - Match
Tufts - Match
BC - Low Match
Stony Brook - Safety
Bing - Safety

Colleges will know where you stand within your class. You must also have a good idea. Not a good chance at Princeton. Average SATs (which means low for an Asian candidate or white for that matter), no special EC. Orm from an OR community. Cornell begins the realistic reach, but you're not a shoo in.

wow being asian really sucks haha. hmm....... i probably should try finding some more reasonable schools. thx for ur input.

Aoshi don't fret, anyone who gets an 800 in math can't have his score considered low. I think that if you don't make Princeton, but I still think you have a good shot, you should look at schools like Duke, Williams,Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Columbia, and NYU. Good luck

alright thx for ur advice. i really hope i can just end this admissions process by getting into Princeton though..... :( hahaha

I don't give chances, but I'm a geologist and wanted to say your list looks pretty good for your major direction. You may want to add Penn State as a safety. You're a good candidate for their honors program and they have an excellent school of geoscience.

Colgate is also another great uni in your region of interest for geology.

I would really consider Williams as a top choice, they are very active in getting their undergrads into research activities.

Also, I think you can make yourself stand out with your interest in the geosciences. It is a very uncommon field to be interested in at your age.

Which AGU conference did you present at?

You misconstrue. It has nothing to do with being asian and everthing to do with having seven of the most selective schools in the country on your list. And by the way, don't add Duke to your list, or you'll have eight of the most selective schools in the country on it.

If I were you, I'd take opholite's advice seriously. Williams is an excellent school and a realistic reach for you. Colgate is very good as well, and the Penn State honors program and school of geoscience is well regarded. Most likely, you'd get accepted at Colgate and you'd almost certainly get into Penn State. Check out the schools before you apply though. Penn State is huge. Colgate is small. Very different environments, to be sure.

Might want to look at Duke, Northwestern and some very good LAC's like Colgate and Holy Cross-very good in sciences.

ophiolite. hey our findings will actually be presented in december at the ocean sciences meeting i believe in California if im not mistaken. our mentor was actually going to take us but the planefare is expensive, so she's presenting our findings at the conference. she says she mentioned our success in recs and stuff, so im hoping that'll make me stand out.

so is Princeton basically an out of the league reach for me now? lol i know that they're HUGE in research, and i really admired their programs, which is why i applied...... but thx for the other school choices too. ill def look into those! haha amptron i won't add duke probably. in fact, i may need to take out some of the schools....

bump bump bumpity bump! :)

bump again :)
