Chances for Yale (EA), Harvard, Princeton

<p>Hey, I'm going to be a senior and I'm starting to get pretty nervous about applying to colleges. I'd appreciate any replies about what you think my chances are for getting into Yale (EA)/Harvard/Princeton and also any advice you have as to what I could do to improve my chances.</p>

<p>General Information:</p>

<p>School Type: Average public school (~2200 people, sending 0-3 students to HYPS each year)
Ethnicity: Puerto Rican/Caucasian
Gender: Female</p>

<p>Stats:</p>

<p>GPA: 4.0 unweighted, not sure with weighting
Rank: 1/~530
SAT I: 2290; M800 CR720 W780 (will retake in the fall to improve CR)
SAT II: 800 Math2, 780 Physics, 780 World History
APs: 5: Music Theory, Calc BC, Physics B, US History
4: World History, English Language and Composition
Senior Schedule: full, most rigorous schedule: 5-6 AP classes</p>

<p>Projected major: applied math, music</p>

<p>Awards:</p>

<p>-Winner of a military band concerto competition (performed as a soloist with the band)
-Regional honor band member for four years (principal oboist for 3 years)
-Played 1st oboe in the all state band
-Boston University Tanglewood Institute wind ensemble
-Honorable mention in a concerto competition to play with the region's semi-professional orchestra
-First place winner in county science fair
-Third place winner in the math category of Intel International Science Fair (ISEF)</p>

<p>Extra Curriculars:
-Oboe lessons for 7 years
-Principal oboist in several community bands and orchestras
-President of my high school's jazz ensemble (I play piano)
-Play in several pit orchestras each year for local productions
-Chamber Choir (sing alto/accompany on piano)
-Music librarian for my high school's wind ensemble
-Math Team (regional qualifier)
-Interact Club <a href="past%20president,%20treasurer,%20class%20representative">community service club</a> very involved in. I increased membership significantly and started many new programs including an annual project through Invisible Children for which we raised over a thousand dollars and collected ~2,000 books.
-Temple youth group (vice president of religious education for two years)
-Participate in the county science fair each year since elementary school (last four projects have focused on combining my interests in music and math/physics)
-NHS member (they don't allow anyone who is an officer of another club to hold an office position)</p>

<p>Summers: music programs</p>

<p>Projected Information:
Essays: okay, not super unique
Teacher Recs: one good, one REALLY good
Counselor Rec: good
Other Rec: from my oboe teacher - really good</p>

<p>Other: both my mother and sister attended Yale</p>

<p>Well it’s never a gaurantee to get into these schools, but with your credentials I’d give a you a VERY good chance to get in. The legacy status definitely doesn’t hurt either.</p>

<p>Yeah, I think your chances at Yale are excellent. Harvard and Princeton - you have as good a shot as most anyone.</p>

<p>I don’t think you need to retake your SAT. Your credentials are already stellar. If you get rejected from any of these schools, it won’t be because of a low CR score.</p>

<p>I think you are most likely in at Yale, with that extra boost from legacy status. As for Harvard and Princeton, you are probably in the top 15-20% of applicants; just make sure your essays clearly define you as a person and your interests. After all, the essay is the only rec. you get to write for yourself, make it outstanding.</p>

<p>Do not worry. Even if you don’t get into HYP, you will most likely get into other top schools.</p>

<p>Good chance at Yale, with the legacy factor. How do your stats/resume compare to your sister? SAT score in general a tad low for Harvard and Princeton. STRONG ec’s and awards. You will get into some good really good schools with your resume! I can not bet against you, even with your CR score, which is sure to go up the next time, right?</p>

<p>Thanks everyone! Yeah, I’m hoping my CR score will go up at least 20 points if not more when I retake it.
And I think compared to my sister my stats are a little bit stronger. She had lower SAT I/II scores, but I think her essays were very strong.</p>
