It’s really hard to chance for Smeal. They had an 11% direct acceptance rate last year. You can still call and switch to DUS or you can wait and if you are denied you can always resubmit for DUS. But there are no guarantees at that point you will get in. Son got in last year with at 4.0 uw and 4.1 w gpa and 1800 sat (old sat) but he still had to do summer session.
For what it is worth, I reached the same conclusion about my son’s chances at Smeal. I called up the admissions office and spoke with a counselor, and they immediately switched him to DUS. His application was complete well before the 11/30 deadline, and they stated it would not set him back. They made it very easy.
@Newtownunit Thanks for the input! Do you think if I were to switch now I’d be considered as before the priority deadline? I hope your son gets in btw!
I applied to smeal and just got denied yesterday because I hadn’t met high school course requirement… decision letter ended with “College course work can substitute for high school units. If you schedule the appropriate substitute course(s) at a local college or university, please email admissions@psu.edu as soon as possible and provide the name of the institution where you plan to take the course(s), a course description, and the number of credits. We will require an official transcript showing that the course is successfully completed prior to enrollment at Penn State.” called admissions and it turned out to be I hadn’t taken a required math course in high school. only two options were to take the course at night, over the summer and send them a description of the course or to update my application to undecided. does this mean I can be accepted if I choose one of these options??
@ellie9x in my opinion I think the undecided option would be the better of the two. That way you can just take the required courses at psu and if you maintain the required gpa you will enroll right into Smeal
