Chances for some merit money?

i think the HHMI internship will help get me more, IMO

EC's don't matter, not at maryland, this ain't a private school. my $1.5k gues was GENEROUS i know person with a 3.9 (4.7), 1380, worked at NASA and Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab and only GOT A $1.5K. SO NOW i THINK ABOUT IT, you might not get anything :(

my friend had 1580 and 4.0 (4.75) got a full ride. UMD's all about test scores and GPA

hinmanCEO, i feel you might be overgeneralizing. ecs do count for something because at my school low 1400s and high 1300s got full rides and we were all in state. i do think the essay does matter some and its important to still pay attention to it.

honestly, i can't see high 1300s getting full rides to UMD unless they're minorities. UMD is very stingy with scholarships.

i agree with lindz0722... black ppl can get into cornell with 1200's (no joke) and yes.. every single hispanic or black with my test grades have either presidential or a full ride to MD. an asian girl got into MIT and HArvard but not a full ride to maryland even though he had a 1520. but if you are black.. 1300 is amazing.

lindz07722 really??? well i'm a minority so i get that but one asian kid at my school had a high 1300 and got a full ride. that was puzzling since another asian had 4.0 and only got 1,500 for one year. i guess my school is just weird. another asian had 1400s and got full ride. no one in my school even the white girl had sats in the 1500s but 2 asians and 1 white person got full rides. the other two were minorities so i try not to speak about those cases since obviously sats tend to be lower.

^I believe you.

That said, at my school, everyone who got any money whatsoever was a strong student (those I know had SATs in the mid 1400 to high 1500 range). Still, their "formula" for determining who among those strong students recieves the most money is nearly undesipherable. It was like they drew names out of a bag. The only consistancy was that those who applied to the egineering school generally recieved more money. There are virtually no minorities whatsoever at my school, so that didn't contribute to the randomness.

I wouldn't hesitate to believe someone can get a good scholarship with lower SAT scores. Everyone at my school was at loss about the scholarship process. It really seemed pretty random.

i doubt that it's a coincidence that like 90% of banneker-key recipients are minorities

(90% is a made-up number based on my anectodal evidence of being a UMD student. anybody know the real number?)

No, it's not. But it's wrong to say that only a minority would get X amount of money for X test score. Because in my experience there was "randomness" even to non-minority scholarship recipients.

90%? Not in our experience.

i agree with umcp11 there's randomness all over-- it definitely doesn't seem like they use a set formula. but i do think there's less randomness for minorities.

ec's must count some. I got a 1410, 4.2 W, 3.7 UW, no ECs really, and I only got 1,500.

I feel like ec's are the way for non-minorities to make up for not being a minority. If I was black I would have gotten presidential most likely. Oh well, the school is cheap anyway instate.

let's put it this way.. asians (not a minority in a sense) get full rides cuz... we all got into ivy league but are cheap so came here. im one of few who got into an ivy.. but $44k is still much more expensive then $16k a year w/ $2.5k total in scholarships :(

i state again... if you are black or hispanic, get around a 1400, APPLY TO UMD! you will get a full ride. hmm that is interesting.. how someone at your school with a high 1300 getting a full ride even though he was asian... maybe poor family? first generation student? both of my rents got PhD's (nerds) so I mean I guess that hurts me too.

lol the year in which i got b/k ther were 129 recipients, of whom 56% were minorities, so the 90% number is bs...and if u are blk or hispanic with 1400, by all means apply, but u are not guranteed anything! yes, your chances of getting a full ride are much greater than your white counterpart, but i know a handful of blacks with 1350+ SATs that dont have ANY scholarships! i also remember a a white female with a 1280 who is bk...she is a triple major in chem, math, spanish with a 4.0 as a rising junior, so maybe test grades aren't everything...just another example, my good friend, egyptian, which basically means black, who got a 1540 and had like a 3.2 in hs because of his poor wk ethic but got the scholarship mainly because of his SATs is on probation now!
