Chances of Recieiving Merit Aid

I was wondering how likely it would be that I would get any merit aid from Maryland, and also how much is possible.

I'm a rising senior from New York

Male
White

Weighted GPA: 99.97 (100 scale)

SAT: 2100 (800 math, 690 reading, 610, writing)

ACT
Composite: 34
English:29
Math: 36
Reading 36
Science: 36

Subject Tests:
Biology E 710
Chemistry 740

Course Load: I took mostly the hardest classes that my school offers and I am a full IB diploma candidate

Extra Curriculars - I was a member of several clubs that my school offered and have held a part time job for the last 2 years. Accumulated 100+ hours of community service through various endeavors. I have participated in sports that were played outside of school

You are fine. I would put money on getting B/K invitation and most likely full. Your resume sounds extremely similar to mine, except I was hispanic (yay for technicalities!), so I don’t know if being white will hurt.

My stats were 2100 (1440 M+R since UMD only looks at that), 720 Physics, 720 US Hist, 750 Math II. 12 AP’s. 10 season sports and numerous clubs. I worked as a tutor for a year as well. My GPA was similar to yours.

I would be astounded if you didn’t get a B/K invite. This girl at my school had worse stats than me and got one too (like 1370 combined, 13 AP’s, and pretty much nothing outside of school other than SGA (a sham at my school) and badminton for 3 years)

My son had similar stats - math 770, critical reading 720, but did NOT get a BannerKey invite. He, too, is a white male however he is in-state (I don’t know if that makes a difference). While disappointed, he really liked the program for his major (computer engineering) so he decided to go there any with the scholarship that was offered. He had lots of outside scholarships that helped to offset the disappointment. All things said and done, he is goint into his junior year and is glad he went there. He was able to get departmental scholarships and an excellent internship where these other factors definitely offset the Banner Key. I guess what I’m saying is you can’t count on the Banner Key (although it is certainly possible), but there are lots of other possibilities that could still make this doable.

I think you’ll definitely get merit aid, but don’t get your hopes up about B/K. You’re definitely qualified and you have a good shot at it, but B/K can be really random and sometimes people with good stats don’t get it. UMD offers many scholarships at different levels though, so you have a great shot at one of them. Just don’t forget to apply by the priority deadline to be considered for merit aid!
