Had a friend who got into three Ivies only get 1500/yr for two years. Somehow I got 5,000/4 yrs. Somehow people with equal or even worse stats than me got the Banneker Key (full tuition, room/board, allowance…haha).

Your GPA and courseload are in the ballpark for merit money. I’m assuming you’re taking more AP classes senior yr? It’s important that you don’t slack there.

Additionally, Eagle Scout is quite a boost and good to see sports and other ECs.

I think it will come down to what you are applying for (ex. engineering school known to give out a bit more money than, say, the English department) and how well they think your strengths tailor to what you are interested in. If you didn’t do the highest math then that might impact your chances for a scholarship if you are interested in engineering/comp sci/etc. If your essays are not literary genius and you want to be an English major, again that might decrease your chances. Also it will depend on how much effort you put into your app. Is it clear you just slacked it off and knew you’d get in, MD is just your safety/last resort? Then they’re gonna wanna offer money to somebody they think is actually considering MD as one of their top choices, shown most I think by effort you put into the app.

In the end I don’t think anyone can chance you for merit money due to all the variables, including the crapshoot one. I think chance posts are somewhat accurate in terms of letting people know whether a school is a match/safety/reach, but money is getting a little too specific. I believe you will get some. How much, hard to say. Could be anywhere from $1500/2 yrs to the full ride. I really can honestly say, knowing a lot of people with scholarships, that I’ve seen people with better stats than you get nothin and people with worse get the whole thing.

It is a crap shoot and if you are going to be in Behavioral Science School, they are the largest school at UMD with the least amount of money…that is why they had the student walk out last yr, so this can explain why someone with a lower stat could get more money.

I maybe in correct, but because UMD is a state funded school, they are limited by the number of OOS they can take. I know UNC is, and I believe UVA also has a set % for OOS.

UMD is actually actively trying to expand the number of OOS students that attend. They’re trying to make themselves a big name state school, but to do that they need to have more OOS students.
Every higher level person I’ve spoken to has mentioned they want to attract more out of state kids, and they even increased the partial B/K scholarship for out of state kids only.

From what I have been told that it is true they want to increase OOS students, but there is a caveat, they are taking it to a national level, so for people from NJ/NY that will hurt you. UMD is filled with the majority of OOS students coming from that area, now they are trying to recruit from other states, especially Mich, California, VA and NC (because their in state colleges are ranked high with organizations like USNWR.) If they can give more merit to these students to make UMD cheaper than the IS for them, then there is a chance that they will become more nationally known and more kids from these areas will apply. Look at Max, astro, and ourselves, we are from NC, but our children chose UMD over places like Duke and UNCCH.

They will never increase the percentage to have a 50-50 split since they are state funded. UVA just went through this issue in 08, because taxpayers were ticked that their kids weren’t getting in, but their taxes were paying for the school. These colleges are funded through state taxes, they are not private. What UMD will do is change the make up where the OOS students come from. 15 yrs ago UMDCP was a safety for OOS NJ/NY students, not so anymore. You will see less and less NJ/NY/CT students.

What about the percentage of students from Louisiana? Anyone know anyone from Louisiana that attends UMCP?

As for being a state school, I viewed the application online, and it is more like a selective private school’s app than the state schools down here require. Down here, most state schools just regular basic info, transcripts, test scores and an app fee. No need for essays unless you’re applying for big scholarships or honors programs. Did I read correctly that there are two essays required for the UMCP application? Also, are you admitted for general admission, then choose your major, or do you have to apply to specific schools, ie, engineering, business?

Well the priority application also gets you reviewed for honors and most scholarships. Also you apply for specific schools. You can not get into the school you want but get into the university.
