Great Rec's from teachers, and amazing rec from guidance counselor

Also, I made the world's biggest rubber band ball by someone under 18.
that's what my essay is about, and how I used to be really shy, but the rubber band ball gave me confidence. It's one big metaphor.

So... what are my chances for those schools?

I would say try to get the test scores up, the gpa is good. Other than that, just apply and see what happens. Admissions these days seem random at times.

USC and berkley u got a good shot other than that....??

My view:

Your GPA equates to 3.7 W, your CR/M SAT score is 1370, and you are out-of-state for all of these schools.

U Penn-reach (average GPA at Penn is 3.84 W and average SAT scores for CR/M at Wharton are about 1480)

NYU-match (average GPA at NYU is 3.6 W and average SAT scores for CR/M at Stern are about 1420)

U Mich-match (at Michigan very few are admitted as freshmen to Ross--so I'm determining acceptance only to the university--3.72 GPA W, 1305 SAT)

USC-match (average GPA at USC is 4.0 W and average SAT is 1360 at USC)

UVa-match to slight reach (average GPA 4.0 W and average SAT to get into UVa is 1330, but it takes more to get in from out of state, so ???)

UC Berkeley--slight reach (average GPA to UCB is 3.93 UW, 4.25 W, average SAT is 1300--and that's just to get into the main school--and it takes more from OOS. Also, you can't get into the business school as a freshman--and only 30% of those admitted to Berkeley that apply for the business school get in--so--keep that in mind if you are accepted to the campus)

Oh, and I love your ECs, but hate your essay topic--but like I said, just my view. (I think your essay should relate more to your concern with accomplishing something in your life and thus the reason for certain ECs--not overcoming your shyness).

Hey, thanks. But how is my GPA only 3.7? It's a point off from an A+. in my school, a 93-94 is A-, 95-97 is A, and 98-100 is A+.. so a 4.0 average is a 100? i thought 4.0 was just A?

And Calcruzer, thanks for the essay tip. I kind of misrepresented it though.. i made the ball when I was 9, and it was a big accomplishment for myself; mostly for shaping my personality (one rubber band at a time. tacky, i know ^_^) but yeah. that's a good idea for relating it to EC's. thanksss

You know, I'm kind of spacey today. I was at the ballpark earlier watching Barry Bonds hit his 715th home run--and I guess I'm kind of been "out-of-it" since.

You are right, of course--a 97 is between an A and A+--so your average is obviously around a 3.95 to 4.0 UW (I'm presuming you can't go above a 4.0)--and your weighted average is around a 4.2--meaning you should get into all of these schools with the possible exception of U Penn--where they'd like to see higher SAT scores.

Your essay sounds better when you put it like that. In fact, maybe you could relate how this ball got you excited about knowing you could accomplish things as well as being more outgoing--and then discuss what you'd like to accomplish. (Don't just list previous things you've done, though--the admissions officers hate that).

Best of success to you.

Michigan, NYU, and UPenn don't weigh GPAs, their average unweighted.

That's good to know. I wish the schools would indicate whether they weight GPAs or not--and whether they give average SAT scores based upon best at one sitting or best of each individual score. For example, in the Princeton Review book, North Carolina gives their average GPA as 4.1--which is obviously weighted, yet the same NYU score and Michigan score you say are unweighted are given in the same book.

I notice that Duke also gives an average SAT score based upon best score on each test, but Berkeley doesn't--so if you scored on the July SAT (600CR/700M/560W) and on the Oct SAT test scored (660CR/650M/520W), then at Duke you get scored as (660CR/700M/560W) for a total of 1360 (2 scores) or 1920 (3 scores), but at Berkeley you get just the better score 1310 (2 scores) or 1860 (3 scores). Presume that this student gets accepted at both schools. Since they compare the "two scores" total, this means Duke shows a 1360 average for students accepted (if this happened for all students) versus Berkeley's 1310 average---yet this is the same student that was accepted at both schools. Stupid, but this is how it works.
