Chances for Tough Schools and BS/MD Programs. Will Chance Back!

***Before I begin the post, I must explain what BS/MD programs are. They are essentially dual degree programs that (for the most part) guarantee acceptance to their medical school if you maintain over a certain GPA in college and score above a certain score on the MCAT exam. Please investigate what BS/MD programs are before you chance me for them (they are extremely competitive and focus mostly on medical experience, good standardized testing, good grades, and good EC's).

Bumpity Bump

These programs are all a reach for you and most students.

The typical student accepted to these programs will have higher SAT and GPA than you, but you may get lucky if you have good essays with your ECs.

K, thanks :/, I thought that the average/wanted average for most admissions officers for these programs are 34+ on the ACT, that is a little wierd how you said that mine was too low O.o, I know that many people do apply with higher scores, but I definitely think I am in the range of consideration/possible acceptance. Also, I think my GPA is also above average for some/most of these schools, I self calculated it and it is either a 4.0 or 3.96, slightly above average of the average people who get accepted. May I ask why you think my grades/gpa is too low? (Yes I know these programs are hard to get into for any student, but I am definitely in range, and most people that get in most probably have similar stats than me, right?)

Your GPA and ACT scores are fine. Students who score 35-36 on the ACT will not fare any better than you because of their test scores. The difference is too small to matter, and you are already past the “proficiency threshold.”

The most selective BS/MD programs are reaches for everyone, but you seem well-qualified. You’ve got the objective stats and medical extra-curriculars to show that you are committed to becoming a physician, and I see a plethora of other extra-curriculars and awards that are generally good for college admissions (i.e. not specific to BS/MD programs). Besides Columbia (which is a reach for everyone), I think most of the non-BS/MD programs are safeties or matches for you. On a side note, though, do you mean Cornell College (Mt Vernon, IA) or Cornell University (Ithaca, NY)?

By the way, if any of the non-BS/MD colleges you are thinking of attending offer a pre-medicine major, please don’t do it. Pre-med majors have lower-than-average acceptance rates into medical school, and the major is often considered less “real” than a subject like biology or chemistry.

Let me know if you have any more questions: back when I wanted to go to medical school, I did a lot of research on BS/MD programs and applying to medical school in general, so I know a fair bit about the process.

Chance back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1688121-chances-for-brown-caltech-mit-uchicago-stanford-etc-will-chance-back-w-detailed-comments.html#latest</a></p>

Thanks for the info :). I meant Cornell University by the way. And ya, I am mostly going to go for Biology or Chemistry or Biochemistry, while still go for a pre-med course path. I know that some colleges consider pre-med a major, but some colleges just have a course program called pre-medicine, in which you still major in whatever you want to, but you get a pre-med advisor that tells you which courses to take to best prepare you for the mcat/medical school. Again, thanks for all the info!

Your ACT scores are on par, as is your courseload. The only thing you lack is a well defined hook. Perhaps your essay will be that for you…or maybe even your extensive EC’s. Spend a lot of time on your essays and you’re a high match at any of these schools. Cornell and Columbia are your only low reaches, but a great essay should grant you admission. Chance back?

Ya I believe I chanced both of you back, tell me if I didn’t. Thanks for all the info and help :). I did already make a common app essay (yes I know I have to make my supplemental essays good too), but it is not as good/as much of a hook as I want it to be, so I am going to redo it to make it seem better. Thanks for all the help and if anyone else wants to give me some advice as well feel free to post :).

Bump, anyone else have opinions/suggestions?

I think that you have a great chance! Don’t fret.

Thanks! Any opinions from anyone else (I chanced everyone back!).

noticed you were a senior… and since its January… how’s your bs/md application process going? where’d you get interviews to?

waiting on most places for interview responses, didn’t get an interview from st. bonaventure

oh I also just got an email saying I made it to george washington’s second stage of review btw, gotta type another essay for that one

did you mention all of (or most of) your EC’s, accomplishments, awards… or just your biggest five or six on your application?

just the top 10 for my common app, top 5 or 6 for some others, it was actually disappointing when I learned I could not show every activity to all of my schools, but what I recommend is try and submit your resume whenever you can, some of my schools required them while others had it optional.

yeah thx… because I have way fewer than you lol. But I’m not going to apply to the higher tier programs.
what do you think about my chances btw… http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1723195-what-are-my-chances-of-getting-into-bs-md-programs-around-the-country.html
