East coast
School is very competitive (one of the best public schools in the state) and sends a lot of kids to top schools
UC GPA: 4.00 (weighted and capped to 8 semesters of honors credit)
Rank: not provided or sent to colleges
SAT: 2220/1470, took Oct SAT and hoping for a 2300+
SAT II: 800s on chem and math iic
APs: Chem (5), Bio (5), Calc AB (5), English Lang (5), English lit, Calc BC, Stat, Econ, Music theory (5)
Sr sched: 4 APs (the classes listed above without scores)
Course rigor: Very rigorous
ECs/job exp/other stuff: I only have 3 main ECs, but they're very focused and I've been doing them for most of my life. I have won awards, honors, etc. for them. Assume that they're above average for both schools.
Additional notes:
-My school has grade deflation, but my school profile doesn't do a good job of conveying that. It only shows the AP scores for AP classes (usually, 75%+ of kids get 5s on AP exams for every class)
-A bunch of Harvard hopefuls (4.0/2400/amazing ECs) from my school are using UCLA/UCB as safeties... will this heavily affect my chances?

By what was given, I’d have to reckon you’re in at both. I know, it’s taboo on CC to say someone’s “in” at such selective colleges, but I genuinely see you wowing admissions officers at both schools. You’re above average in every respect given. So long as you have strong letters and essays, you’re in at both. I’d try to demonstrate that you have more of a serious interest in these schools than the other applicants from your school if you can.

In all likelihood “in” at both and I don’t think your ECs will be much of a factor good or bad, but your intended major might. Does your family really want to pay the steep tuition to attend an OOS public?

My GPA is actually really below average (it’s 4.00 WEIGHTED not UW), and UCLA/UCB’s averages are around 4.15-4.2. Do you guys think that everything else in my app can make up for that? Because I keep hearing that GPA is by far the most important for those schools. I’m applying to letters and science, and my parents can pay the full OOS price without a problem.

The GPA profile in the UC website is weighted UC gpa. You said you are at 4.0, and your scores are pretty good. College of Engineering is more selective and that is probably what brings their GPA high. You are targetting Letters and Science, you should definitely apply. They do look at the whole application and they do want their fair share of OOS tuition.

Thanks for all the responses. Do you guys think that it’ll make a huge different if a bunch of equally qualified or more qualified applicants from my school apply there too?

Your academic profile appears to be a match. That’s the good news! The less good news is lots of applicants with similar GPA & test scores didn’t get accepted to both UCLA and Berkeley this year. Good luck!

SAT II’s: chem 750 math 2 c: 740 US History: 730 Biology 700 Korean 720
