Chances for UCs?

I’m applying to UCLA (top choice), UCSD, and UCB (reach), among others on the east coast (from CT). I’m nervous for these 3 because I’m majoring in microbiology (pursuing premed) and these are all top/competitive schools for premed.

I’m from Connecticut and my school is ranked between #200-250 in the nation (for public schools probably). What are my chances for UCLA and UCSD? Is it harder since I’m applying microbiology and out of state?

Yes it is harder because OOS do not receive any financial aid benefits. The costs would be $55K+ per year which is really expensive for public state universities. As a state university funded by California taxpayers, you would not receive state scholarships or grants.

UC applicants are required to take a full year of a graded visual/performing arts course which a number of OOS students don’t expect.

Your GPA appears okay, but your ACT for UCLA/UCB is not competitive unless you are a recruited athlete. UCSD is similar but not as tough. Also, the STEM majors are impacted, so the higher stats, the better the chances. Instate students have better odds.

All three UC’s will be tough admits.
You look like a qualified applicant and if you can afford the costs, definitely worth applying. UCSD would be your best chance.

Good luck

UCLA/UCB - low reach (ACT too low)
UCSD - high match
