Chances for University of Tehran (Iran)

I'm a second semester Persian (language) student at Michigan State who has applied to the University of Tehran. I've heard stories that students will be accepted but Iran will refuse to issue a passport. I was wondering if anyone here had any experience or thoughts on my chances. My GPA is 3.25.

lmao, I was half expecting the title to be a catchy joke to get everyone's attention...No offense to you of course...good luck!

What would be the appeal to go there ?
Just curious...I have read so many negatives and horrific things that have happened to students and professors there.
I can't fathom why you would leave here and go there.

The stories you hear in the mainstream media are in the minority. You have to wonder if foreigners who have problems in Iran still haven't gotten the idea that this isn't America?

I'm going to Iran because I want to live in a fundamentalist Muslim country and experience that life. I'm an anthropology major and Iran has sparked my interest.

Persians are really nice. Everyone gives their country a bad rap though.

Well, if you want to live in a repressed dictatorship, with censorship and Islamic law, go ahead. I hope you aren't gay (you will be hanged) or a woman (have to cover yourself up or be stoned), and I really hope you don't like free speech, because you won't have any there.

But good luck, if that's what you want!

I just said I wanted to live in a "repressed dictatorship" as you call it. Although I dispute the term "repressed."

I also alluded that I'm interested in living in a fundamentalist Muslim country.

Not gay, nor woman -- nor a Christian. But if I was a Christian I'm sure I could keep my proselytizing under control. :)

They have free speech. They also have restricted speech. Every democracy has restricted speech of some form. In Israel you can be imprisoned for up to two years for denying the holocaust. There are also laws geared towards those who say provocative things about other religions. In the United States we have restrictions on free speech.

Your post is cute, but that is all. I am an anthropology major and that goes a long way towards explaining my attitude.

And in Iran, you can attend a Holocaust Denial Conference!

If you want to live in that deluded country, have a great time. All the intellectuals have left or are trying to leave.

Anthropology is the art of explaining how complex systems are. When politicians and others try to pigeon hole people and even countries, we seek to put things into their proper context and find out what is really going on. A complete picture.

You are absolutely correct about that. It sounds like you have interesting reasons for going. I know a number of wonderful Iranians (they all live in the US!).

Sorry for being snarky, and best of luck to you.

No harm done. Cheers.

Atomical,
My views in Iran are not based on current events and news in recent years.
I have no qualms about whether or not Persians are nice people, nor would I care to compare the freedom of speech of Israel or Iran.....how did that get drawn into this thread ,really ????
there are similar restrictions in Europe too, but that is not the subject matter in this topic now, is it ?
I grew up in the midst of the Islamic Revolution in Iran and have become informed from a western media to other publications on this matter, and my knowledge goes beyond what ahmadinijad headlines are.
If you feel comfortable leaving a land of freedom and opportunity to experience a fundamentalist lifestyle... well, I have no appropriate comment for you other than good luck to you

cool, i'd like to go to a school in a country other than the US

Free speech was brought up by another poster and I felt it necessary to address it lest this thread get carried away. But none are your posts are to the point either are they? This forum is about what my chances are and so you have many options to express your perception of Iran towards Americans and American students in particular.

I should say that I have some anecdotal evidence that says that universities approve Americans for study and those students are never able to obtain a Visa. But I feel that there may be a way and I may be missing something.

Well then..there is your answer to how free the Iranian government is and how open they are to Americans studying in their theocracy.
