With really great essays, can I get into these schools?

University of Virginia
The College of William & Mary
Wake Forest University
Virginia Commonwealth University

Thank you for taking the time to read and respond! :)

Your UW GPA is quite strong and it is fantastic that you are graduating top 10 in your class. The EC’s are very interesting, especially the superintendent council. For those schools your ACT scores are on the low side (for instance, W&M 25th to 75th percentile is 29-32) so if you have time, perhaps consider one more retake. Otherwise, your rest of your application is strong and it helps if you are instate.

You will be evaluated holistically so not one thing is going to necessarily bring you down. To see how past applicants from your school did you could use Naviance if your school offers it. In my opinon, writing a good essay that really showed who I was and reflected my personality really helped in getting accepted by W&M. Good luck!

As far as the ACT goes, I don’t really have much time. I ran out of time and this was basically my only shot. But I only took it once, so maybe that will be taken into account when reviewing the application.

Also, not sure if it helps, but my usage/mechanics subscore was an 18.

UVA, W&M, and Wake Forest are low reaches. I would consider maybe applying test optional to Wake Forest because that ACT is not great. Everything else looks awesome!

@eastcoastplease2015 Thanks for the chance!

@Alden97 Thanks! I am from Virginia, and I’m not from NoVA, so I should stand an even better chance. Not having to compete with kids from Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Fairfax, Chantilly and McLean (at least from my own school) will definitely help me.

You are very impressive and your GPA is stellar for these schools! Although your ACT is not the highest, I feel that you are still a very solid candidate and I would be surprised if you did not get into these schools! BEst of luck to you :)

Are you applying as a transfer applicant or as a freshman? If you are applying as a transfer and you have a 4.0 college GPA, then I would be very surprised if you were declined from those VA schools, especially if you are getting a 4.0 through a VCC. However, that will make it harder to get into Wake because wake accepts a lower percentage of transfer applicants vs. freshman first year applicants. That being said, you would still have as good of a shot as any transfer with that gpa and your high school stats! Best of luck to you!

@ivykid4thewin Thank you! You’ve made me feel a little better.

@cavalier6 Thank you! My advisor told me to apply as a Freshman. She actually graduated from UVA, but even she told me that when she went, there were many applicants much more qualified than her and also some with much lower qualifications. It’s all up in the air.

College Confidential has made me feel a little better. Hopefully I’ll make it into at least one of these schools.
