Chances for ..?

I'm unsure right now what kinds of schools fall into which categories for me. I don't know what I would consider a safety, or match, or reach, or high reach. I would like to apply to at least one school in each category, so if I can get help figuring out what falls where, it'd be greatly appreciated.

GPA: 4.08 (W), 3.18 (UW)
ACT: 31, going to retake in September
SAT: 1990, don't think I'm going to send it
SAT Subject Scores: U.S. History: 730; Biology: 690, taking Math II in October
APs: AP Euro (4), AP Bio (3), AP Psych (5), AP Lang (4) AP U.S. (5)
Extracurriculars: Two year Service Club Secretary (although club president is sort of lacking this year, so although I'm secretary, I'll probably have more of a presidential role because I've been on board longest); Yearbook Writing Editor, one year frosh tennis, one year cheerleading
Project Senior Schedule: AP Lit, AP Gov, AP Econ, AP Art History, AP World, AP Enviro, Yearbook

I'm also considering Questbridge. For those who are familiar with the program, do you think I have a chance of being a finalist?

Thank you. (:

Bump. Anyone?

Your standardized test scores are a bit low but your course load and AP scores are really good.

Match- something like a good state school {UVA, Umich}
Reach- Bowdoin, Williams
High reach- top ivies

of course this is all speculation

Thanks for your opinion. I actually hope I can get into a good state school, though I doubt it. I’m from California, so good state schools here are Berkeley and UCLA, which I’m sure are way out of reach!

I don’t think your standardized test scores are too low for UofRoch. Don’t send in you SAT, since your ACT right now is in UofRoch’s middle range. Your GPA is the part that is on the low-side for UofRoch. How can your GPA go from a 3.18 UW to 4.08 W. This implies grade inflation, or that you that your school has a really hard grading scale. A 3.18 GPA is kind of low for UofR, but if your rank is high that can offset the low GPA for sure. Your test scores and courseload are all on par for UofRoch, but your unless your GPA can be negated by the fact that a) your rank is high (b) you come from a competitive/highly ranked high school, I’d say UofRoch is a reach. I would still apply since it isn’t a high reach, and with great essays and recs you have a decent shot.

I think the disparity between the unweighted and weighted GPAs is a result of a lot of APs and honors. I could be wrong though. I’m not sure how my school calculates weighted GPAs. I didn’t realize that it was unusual. I’m somewhere in the top fifty out of a class of 500. Thanks for your opinion. I hadn’t considered Rochester, but I will look into it.

What is your UC GPA?

I haven’t calculated it. I’m on the fence about applying to UCs right now. The only UC I’m interested in is Berkeley, and I feel like it’s beyond me. And with the recent rise in tuition, and the less generous financial aid from public universities …

So are you typically getting Bs in your APs, and since they’re weighted they go up to A’s? Try to figure out how your school calculates GPA, it’s important.

Yeah, I think that’s about right. Well, actually I get A’s in AP classes and B’s in honors class. And C’s in math … So my grades suck awfully. Which is why I’m not sure what kind of schools I should apply it.
