Chances? From NYU Stern to Georgetown McDonough

Current Freshman trying to transfer a sophomore.

HS GPA: 93/100
NYU GPA: 3.35
SAT: 2220 (790 math, 710 writing, 720 reading) SAT 2s: 750+

I applied to georgetown last year but was double waitlisted. My extracurriculars were very strong in HS (president 4+ clubs, music, lacrosse, etc) and are pretty good as a freshman. I've already received work experience through an internship at a venture capital firm and am currently a part of Stern's international volunteer program (through interview/application) and am also on nyu's club lacrosse team and other stern clubs. My primary concern is the low GPA that I have. Thoughts?

You have great extracurricular activities and SAT scores, but if you couldn’t be admitted to Georgetown with an “A” average in high school, you probably won’t be admitted to Georgetown with a “B” average in college, even though Stern is a rigorous school. Georgetown’s website states that on average, accepted transfer students have a 3.7 GPA.

It’s worth applying, all you have to lose is the cost of the application fee. Like you said, your GPA is a bit low, but you have good ECs. However, I think your chances are pretty slim.

If you don’t mind me asking, why’re you trying to transfer out of Stern?

I’m no admissions officer, but I believe that you’re High SAT scores and HS GPA are a great plus. The GPA’s low, but you’re in Stern and I’m sure that the Georgetown Admissions Officers will know about the infamous Stern curve. Write a stellar essay and get a good recommendation and hope for the best!

Either way, I hope you get in so I can take your spot :D

@Madbroke, I guess i’m not really ready to live in the city yet and would rather have the college experience. NYU doesn’t have much of a sense of a community which is something i value.
