Chances getting into Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering?

I’m top 7% with a low SAT of 1130. Female, mixed race of white and Hispanic. Varsity soccer all 4 years. President of Business Club.

Unfortunately with your SAT score I think getting into engineering will be a reach. You will get accepted to UT but probably not to engineering. If you really want to try engineering apply to some other schools as well - Texas Tech, UTA, UTD, University of Houston. They all have mechanical engineering, some have aerospace.

Thanks! Looks like I have to continue to study hard for my SAT and ACT that’s coming up!

I am applying to UH and the rival school A&M, but UT would be ideal. Do you think that if I do good freshman year I can possibly reapply for the engineering schools?

To switch majors you need to have a very high GPA, 3.8 or above. That is hard to do but possible. If you don’t get accepted, you can switch to a different school. Do study for the next SAT/ACT score and give it your best.

Based on my daughter’s friends admissions season this most recent year, you would be admitted to UT (top 7%) but offered a completely different major. From reading here and from listening to real life experiences, chances of transfer to a competitive program like engineering are pretty low.

Practice that SAT and get it up ASAP. I would also encourage you to take the ACT. Daily practice can really really help. Your SAT score makes admissions into engineering at Texas AM a reach also.

Are you taking an AP Calc class this fall?

What about the other way around. Any chance to get in to Engineering if you are white with good (1500) SAT score, but not in the top 7% from your highly competitive school?

No I will be taking dual credit Chemistry this year.

@TXPapa, there would be a chance to get into Engineering if you are white with a 1500+ SAT score but not the class rank. Your odds would be much better if you were in the top 7%. Not being in the top 7%, you are competing for about 15% of the slots with both instate and out of state students. If you had a perfect math score, great ECs, or a great essay that made you stand out, it would increase your chances.

@carachel2 I will be taking Dual Credit Chemistry and Engineering Science (which is the second year engineering at my school)
