Chances @ Harvard =-o

2004-2005

Middle 50% at Harvard.

700-790 Math.

700-800 Verbal.

1400-1590 composite.

2100 would be like, 1400 roughly averaged on the old test. It gets harder to get into Harvard every year, and you'd be around the 25%, meaning you'd usually need some type of hook; I think you're underestimating Harvard a tiny bit. Being a URM would help, though, usually URMs/athletes/legacies fill the lower 25% (not all of it, but usually, from what I've heard).

How much do you think personality will fill?

FYI: I think there will be like 10 Semifinalists/175.

Personality fills a lot, but remember that there are tons of people with a lot of personality, as well as really high stats. Keep in mind that while a lot of personality can make up for some things, in an ivy it is often very difficult to show how unique or incredible you are befcause, frankly, there are tons of people that are very unique and incredible but also have very high stats.

dude, if you score a 1950 (650 Math, 550 CR, 750 Writing),
chances are you won't get a 2100 on a retake.

But you're a URM, so apply and let the chips fall where they may.

Well...I think I can get the math to like 700+, CR 650+....

Writing will probably stay the same.

Well, I wish you the best of luck. Get some prep books, they're very helpful.

Will that heavily increase my chances, or just kinda.

Yes, it will raise your chances. Let's face it, affirmative action already gives you a solid chance of getting into Harvard even with your current SAT score of ~1950. It's sad, but this is today's reality of college admissions. Race is a factor.

If you raise your SAT score to a 2100, your chances will be even higher.

higher = better

solid chance = good

I've worked really hard for it though, I feel, even if it doesn't show. To be honest, I'm half Hispanic, but I live with my mom (of whom is Hispanic). Does that really make a difference?

I'm sure you've worked hard for it. We all did :)
But for HYP, hard work isn't enough, unfortunately...

Just do what we're all going to do - apply and pray lol

if you're half Hispanic, just put Hispanic.

2100 + URM really isn't bad at all, but keep your ranking in mind as well. If you do good prep between now and the next test a 2100 is very possible.

Will 2100 put me in the running though with my rank and stuff? I just need to be in the running

your in the running... but other people will be running on marathon pace and youll be the little crippled kid in the back hoping that some car or somebody can carry you to the finish line...

heres the thing...
a. your grades and SAT are way below harvard stds.
b. you're going to have to write ridiculous essays to showcase this "brilliant" personality of yours
c. with more and more people applying to more and more colleges, adcoms dont have as much time to consider your essays... therefore, stats become more important, and yours arent quite good enough.

id say youve got maybe 5-10% chance of getting in... good luck

Cruoton,
you seem to ignore his URM status completely...
this factor automatically raises his chances to the 15-20% margin.

What about EA?

Don't apply EA. Because of your low stats, it will only lower your chances; the EA applicant pool is stronger.

Apply RD.

I feel bad now...I don't know what to do, except raise my SAT scores...and I can only realistically raise them so much.

Dude, you really shouldn't feel bad. Raise your SAT score as much as you can, and then work on your essays.

The adcoms really are more lenient than you think :)

Are you serious, on the whole leniency thing? Grr...Rank is horrible probably, and I can't do anything about it.

Glucose, I'm not saying your chances are absolutely stellar (come to think of it, virtually no one has stellar chances for HYP). What I am telling you is that you have a decent chance, particularly because of your URM status, and it would therefore be foolish not to apply.

Raise that score to a 2100 -- it may still be a little on the low side, but it is a respectable score, even for HYP. Highlight your character through your essays and EC's. Apply RD;the EA pool is significantly stronger and to compete with such applicants would only put you at a disadvantage.

And, above all, calm down and take everything in perspective. I sincerely believe you have a decent shot; and if you don't get in? life goes on. There are plenty of top-tier colleges that you could get into. You should also consider some of the 'lower' Ivies, such as Duke or Cornell.

But,once again, I truly believe you have a chance. Apply and wait.
