Chances @ Harvard =-o

Duke isn't an ivy but it's definately up there.

Glucose, don't let anything me or anyone else says discourage you from applying if you really want to. Every year people get into colleges that everyone told them they had no chance at. I will still contend that your chances aren't great, are improved by your URM status, would be hurt by your ranking, would be helped somewhat by 2100 SATs, etc. However, I think that as long as you just work hard you'll end up at a great school.

tries so hard to get 2100+

I hope I can do it; I know I can do it!

can you give me a link to the AI calculator.
or tell me what mine is

also, what kind of SAT should I aim for to get in the (6-9) bracket.

thanks a lot.

I don't believe in the AI

precocious - I 2nd your story on post #6. I met this girl at All State band (we kept in touch) and I just found out she got into Harvard with a 4.03, and a 2020 on her SAT (yes, GASP). She DID however, have REALLY nice extra currics: like being in All State band for the two years all state is available to our state, and was part of MYS (minnesota youth symphony).

I just attended a college meeting with Penn, Georgetown, Harvard, and Duke. They contended that all/the majority of students applying to top schools are very well qualified with good SAT scores, and good records in school. Someone who got a 2300-2400 on their SAT should be commended, but not necessarily granted top college access without good extra currics. Sure, school can be a passion of a student. However, many times that student will also have a major interest inside the school environment, leading to awards. The college representatives for Harvard and friends agreed that SAT scores should NOT be an extra curricular, AND that colleges won't consider those scores as such.

I'm not denying the importance of SAT scores, however I am saying that one's passions will be apparent in one's extra currics, and that's what colleges care about.

fhimas88888888 --> were you at the one in White Plains yesterday??
Cuz if you were, I was there too ;)

To the OP:

Aim for at least 2200 SAT and you're set for all Ivies.

Being a Hispanic (Mexican) Sophomore myself.

unless I can't learn how to read, I don't think so...lol

it's really killing me because I know writing can be like 750+ no problem, math isn't that hard for me to get like 700+ it's just that I hadn't had time to go over "special" questions (permutations/combinations) and I didn't go fast enough for one section (time management). reading is the one I'm BAD at...I feel like I "understand" the passage (which apparently you're not suppose to do)...anyways....:-</p>

Ok...update

I did poorly on the APs (probably 1 Physics, 4/5 English, 4 US History, 3 Statistics).

Rumors leaked you have to have like a 96 to be top 20%, so I'm hoping I have a chance at least at the top quarter.

I'm hoping to get 2100+ SAT IIs, and 2150 SAT (new goal, will practice over the summer).

My brother is at harvard right now and his roommate is hispanic and from a poor family in california. He got a 1350 SAT and a 3.8 or 3.9 GPA there and was admitted early to harvard.

Its definitely possible...shoot for the stars and youll land somewhere great.

:-) it sounds so realistic now...all I can do now is dream (and get SAT scores) and hope I'm what they want.

hey glucose--i'm hispanic too, and i'll be applying to harvard as well, hopefully we'll meet in cambridge in september fall '07 : )

maybe, where are you from

AI is nonsense, all of these "guessing" systems are rubbish. I'll provide you with two stories on how this is true.

1) Best friend: Public high school with no prestige at all, participated in nearly ZERO EC's, not dedicated to anything at all, only a member of Social Studies Honor Society.
Note: Stats are when he applied to college this past fall.
GPA: ~3.65UW/4.4W
Rank: ~30/550 (~6%)
ACT: 32
10-11 AP's at graduation, only one "5" on Calc AB, "4" on BC, mostly "3"'s on others, took Linear Algebra and another advanced math class at local CC senior year, but got ~"B-/C" in both courses.
Internship at local software company for most of senior year.
No special awards of any kind, white, lower-mid-class, no disabilities except some heart trouble when he was younger, nothing significant though.

Accepted: Duke (Pratt Engineering) - Regular Decision.

2) Me - same school, white, mid-class, single parent, no legacy except G-town (didn't apply)
Note: Again, when I applied
GPA: 3.477UW/4.1W
Rank: ~66/550 (12%)
ACT: 30
10 AP's at graduation, 6 taken senior year. (3,4,4,1 at end of Junior year, only put the 3,4, and 4 (psych, american, eng. lang) in app.)
Nationally ranked debater, but at time of application had only placed 3rd at the Wake Forest Earlybird in PFD, and won some "1st's" on the regional circuit in senior year (won States, etc later on, but they never saw that), while an alternate for states and nationals as well as more "1st's" regionally in Congress Junior year, nominated for local Pathfinder scholarship (hadn't won when they got final app.)
Pres. of Debate Team
VP of Law Club
Co-Captain of Mock Trial Team
Social Studies Honor Society (just a member)

My major is going to be Anthropology/Linguistics

I'm hoping for the best

I've been prepping my heart out for the CR, Math, and Writing (not so much, but still)

I'm hoping I'll make it

lol my SAT I were horrible (1750) But I'm gonna prep my heart out too for october, but for the sat II i got a 800/750/640 I'm retaking chem, and math, and maybe bio in november...let's see how that goes

Take the ACT...if you havent already..you might do better on it
