Chances? I guess I just need something to do while I wait (impatiently)

I would say that BU is my top choice right now. I’ve been accepted to other colleges as well with scholarships, but I have to be honest: I just have a good feeling about the campus, the city and the students – I would really like to see myself there. I’ve applied to CAS as an English major.

Here are my stats:

Academic GPA: 4.10 weighted/3.95 unweighted
Senior year GPA: 4.40 weighted/4.20 unweighted
Average grade: A. I got a B+ in one semester of AP Chemistry and a B+ in one semester of Trig. Otherwise, they’re all variants of A’s.
Rank: 7/383

SATs scores (which distresses me to no end)

SAT I:
610 Reading 640 Math 650 Writing
1900/2400
1250/1600

SAT II:
710 Biology M 710 Chemistry 610 Mathematics Level 2

APs:
Biology (5), Chemistry (4), English Lit (n/a), Calculus (n/a)

Honors:
Biology Honors, English 1 Honors, Chemistry Honors, English 2 Honors, World History Honors, English 2 Honors, Physics Honors

Extracurricular:
Three years of Mock Trial (two years as captain), President of the Photography Club, French Club, Christian Club, Link Crew Team Leader for two years (one year as Link Crew Commissioner), Three years of being a Conflict Manager (it’s like a peer support thing)

Community Service: 200+ hours from various locations. Including working at a local library, working at local museum, being a children’s art and science camp counselor, and being a counselor at a nonprofit camp for kids who come from very low income families. I was also a student ambassador for People to People International

Awards:
Honor Roll for all four years of high school (schoolwide)
Central County Occupational Program - in Photography and Childcare (Statewide)
Mock Trial - two years (Countywide)

Essays:

 1. I’m having second thoughts about my common application essay. It’s different but a bit of a risk. I basically talked about a time where I failed to follow my principles and what I learned from the experience.

The supplement probably had some of my better essays. I’m a decent writer and things just flowed well for me. But, I dunno. How do I stack up without considering my essays?

I was waitlisted for Northeastern University and UChicago. I got into UC San Diego, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, Seattle University, University of Portland and the Liberal Studies Program (or whatever it’s called - the two year thing) at NYU.

My only question is have you let them know BU is your first choice?
Have you visited and/or interviewed?
Your stats are fine, but if they think you only applied as a safety there’s a very small possibility you might get waitlisted.
I think you’re in.

Thanks so much for your reply, especially since it brings good news! haha

Unfortunately, I didn’t let them know that BU was my first choice – it never occurred to me that this might affect anything. I also did not get interviewed but luckily, I did get a chance to visit and I mentioned my visit in one of the supplements. Hopefully, that will get the point across ):

Yeah, people usually don’t visit safety schools.
You’re in.

I predict you’re in as well…hopefully… as my daughter has similiar stats. BUT I did discover there are no guarentees as she was waitlisted at American U. We were surprised by that. It definately was not her top choice, but a safety. She did get into Syracuse & Ithaca Journalism programs. Good Luck.

Thanks AVHS Dad. I’ve got my fingers crossed!

MTnest2, best of luck to your daughter. I get the sense that things are very unpredictable - I have a lot of friends who were waitlisted for schools that they were certain they would get in based on stats. But if she got into Syracuse & Ithaca Journalism programs, I’m sure that she’ll have a more than decent shot at getting into BU.
