Chances?..I know...u guys hate these..but I have no clue

Im going to be a senior in the fall and I was wondering what are my chances to Barnard

I have a 3.3 GPA…I KNOW! HORRIBLE>>DISPICABLE!!

but Im going to be changing a couple of my grades so I think it will go up to 3.4

I was an editor for my school newspaper and magazine during my junior year

I was picked for editor-in-chief…but decided not to take the position because I decided to make my own magazine. Basically my school newspaper is greatly sensored by the school and I felt that the newspaper was being restrianed from reporting on the important issues and didnt allow any of us to express our opinions. SO I decided to make my own magazine; it is focused on the question of race issues and the way woman are treated in society and currect events and so on. the magazine is actually going to be a womans rights magazine that also includes articles on current events and talks about a lot of the stuff that you usually dont see in a teen magazine.

So I am editor-in chief of the magazine…and its going to be distributed around my city. I hope to send a copy of it with my application…do you guys thing this will help me?

I plan to major in woman studies
Im taking a woman studies class at UCLA this summer…and Im 100% sure I’ll be getting an A. I hope to ask the professor for a rec.

I got a 35 on my ACT

but a 3 on my AP US HISTORY test

I got a 750 on SAT lit and us history

I was also on the yearbook staff during junior year
I will be in my school newspaper staff senior year…but only as a copy editor and staff writer ( I was also a copy editor last year)

so do I have a chance?

I hope to send my poem book to the college as well …with the magazine

will the magazine help my chances…because its something I made and developed ( and financed …( by selling ads in the magazine to local shops))

THANKS FOR YOUR TIME…if you need any more info…just ask
IM APPLYING for early decision.

nice act score. take the sat's

Oh...and I took 2 APs and 1 honors course during junior year
senior year I will be taking my most rigorous schedule
also..is it true they see your first semster grades in senior year? what if your applying ED?

ALSO I HAVE HAD an intership with the local newspaper for 2 yrs.

As you've probably heard, the admissions process isn't strictly a numbers game at Barnard. The admissions committee likes to look for well rounded, passionate women. That being said, I think you have a very good chance for ED; your extra curriculars/internship definitely show a passion, and your ACT/SAT II scores are great. I disagree with hinmanCEO; there's no reason to take the SAT with an ACT score of 35, except if you feel the need to.

I think sending in your magazine with the application is a great idea! It will show your passion for writing and women's studies. However, I'm not sure about the poem book, it could be overkill. Maybe just a few short poems along with the magazine?

I applied ED and I think Barnard saw my current grades at the time of applying. You could always call admissions and ask them.

Good luck!!

I just read in this thread that barnard weighs the gpa higher than someone's sat/act score!

I HAVE A HORRIBLE GPA (3.3 ..maybe a 3.4) , but a good ACT score ( 35 )

am I totally screwed???

I have an ok amount of outside activites...like my own organization to help the elderly and the abused

me being editor and copy editor during junior yr

me having my own magazine that revolves around the topic of woman's rights ( im applying as a woman studies major) ( I going to send the magazine with my app.)

Im in the Quill and Scroll honor society

yearbook..and...welll u get the point.

I don't think anyone can accurately predict what the ad com at BArnard would do. That being said, I love that you are passionate about certain issues, enough so that you started your own publication! i think that would be an excellent point in your favor.

If you are sure that Barnard is your first choice and if financial concerns are not a priority, apply ed to maximize your chances. But definitely search for other schools that would be a match for you.

Best to you!

SAT and ACT scores really dont matter much to Barnard. At all. I'd say its a pretty big reach, though you'll have a better chance if you really milk those "passions"

I think your choice to deny the Editor-in-Chief position could make for an excellent answer to the "Most significant activity" question. You definitely have a passion for journalism. Now you just have to have it come across in your app. Your low GPA might keep you out of the running for ED, but you definitely have a great shot for RD if you bring up your GPA 1st semester senior year.

In answer to your question about grades, Barnard won't recieve your 1st semester grades if you apply ED, but they will if you apply RD. Eventually, they will get ALL of your grades however, so don't slack off!

Remember to take all of our comments with a grain of salt. No one knows for sure what they're looking for. Just make sure you put your best foot forward and convince the adcom that you're a perfect fit, and you should have an excellent chance.

so is it really true like the previous person said....my act score really dont help me that much...gosh...I thought it could SOME WHAT help for the fact that my gpa is low

should I take it again and try to get a perfect ...?..but then again..that only one more point.

im just scared they wil think Im a slacker because of my high act and low gpa

yeah it helps a little but you're missing the point... gpa and sat scores arent the only thing they look at. like i said before, milk your "passions"

well for passions: my number one passion is woman's rights and the fight for equality...and I took a woman studies class at ucla before ( lecturer is giving me a rec) and i gave up AP english this year to take woman's literature beucase I know the teacher and she told me it would really interest me and I am made a magazine that deals with these topics...also I think im going to write 1 of my essays of this passion

I gave up a lot of stuff to go for my passions...eg..editor in cheif and ap english..I hope the college understands that and realizes how much passion I have for these topics

Many top schools do NOT accept AP English credit for the Freshman writing requirement (Barnard gives credit, but not for any course) so I say- go with your passion!

Barnard called the guidance office for D's first semester grades when she applied ED. If they want this information, they'll solicit it.
