Chances in Ivy Leagues

I was wondering if it's possible to get in without having over 1400 SAT's. Like if you have mid 1300's but very good academics such as:

3.933 Unweighed GPA (highest if 4.0)
Took AP Euro in 10th Grade.
4 Ap's this year: Biology, Calculus AB, English III, Psychology and plan to take like 6 AP's next year.

I'm a junior. I only got like 1300 on First SAT but trying to get like 1400+. But even if I only get in the 1300's chances of getting into an IVY league are like small to nothing?

The lower your SATs, the higher everything else has to be and you should have something to distinguish your app as well. More important than your GPA is your class rank and the school you attend. What did you get on your AP Euro? Your AP scores would give a good indication of the difficulty of your classes, if your school is not on the colleges' radar screens. Also your SAT2s are very important.

My niece got into Cornell with a 1220 SAT1. But she had top level SAT2s, and many AP courses, in addition to a high rank in a school that sends a number of kids to Cornell each year. She was also fluent in French to the point that she could write a college level essay in the language which really interested the Modern Languages department, and she had some impressive ECs. My son got in with SATs right around the 1400 mark but he was an athlete though not particularly recruited by Cornell. He also had won some state awards and scholarships in government related things, and he had applied to ILR. He was an excellent match for the program.

Yeah I guess you have a good point. My school is one of the best in the county with many intelligent kids. Around 4000 students total and 900 juniors. By the 12th grade, I might be in the top 10 kids, hopefully top 1%. I got a 4 on the AP Euro test unfortunantly. I'm in around 6 clubs in my school but not many positions. Hopefully, my volunteer project with kids in hospitals can help me. Weighted GPA was only a 4.7 at the end of next year cause only took 1 AP in 10th, but with all AP classes this and next year, should be much higher. Also on the swim team. I should have either 10 or 11 AP classes by end of high school.

Thanks for your reply.

Any more opinions would be appreciated.

I agree with Jamimom,

with those SAT's I would look first at Cornell, if you are from New York. If not, you may have a shot at Cornell, Penn, Brown or Columbia if you are only considering the schools with the marginally lower SATs.

In either case, you need alot more than even high SAT's.

Personality and passion will account for a great deal more. All the SAT does is open a door, it doesn't let you in.

Unless you have a real hook, it would be very hard to get into any top school where your SAT score is below the school's average, which is mid to high 1400s at most. Those admitted below the average are mostly athletes, URMs, legacies (even hard for this group) and development candidates.

As other posters have said, it isn't all about stats. On the one hand, a few candidates with ~1300 SATs have gotten into Ivies; on the other hand, many with 1500+ SATs have not. Admissions people look at everything: tests, grades, rigor of academic program, ECs, essays, recommendations, and "hooks" (sports, URM, legacy, etc). It's the whole, not the individual parts, that gets you in.

Ivies are reaches for almost everyone. If your grades stay high and your SATs shoot up--which they can and do for a lot of people--you have a chance; but you need to start looking at other schools too.

Well grades will stay up most likely. Hopefully the next SAT I take will be like 1400+. If not, I'll study even more and take the new one in May.

Michael Krop Senior High.

Remember i said its one of the best in the "County" not country. Don't want to confuse anyone.

Thanks for all posts, any more would be appreciated.

threads as these are lame. just do your best in high school and take your chances applying at them, if you think you deserve to be there.
