Your chances of getting in to CLA and CDES are definitely good. As for your other questions, I’m a freshman at the U, so I’ll use my own experiences and what I’ve heard to answer your questions.

There isn’t one specific social scene here. Honestly you can find people who are interested in the exact same things you are with 50,000 students. There are parties every weekend, with and without alcohol, and it’s super easy to make friends, especially if you’re living in the dorms. The U itself is like it’s own town, so there is definitely never a shortage of college kids, especially since a lot of students from other colleges (St. Johns, etc) come to the U on the weekends. The U is also a 15 minute bus ride from downtown Minneapolis, which has a ton of 18+ clubs on the weekends, First Avenue and Spin are probably the most popular, depending on your scene.

As for your college/major choices. You’ve listed three majors, I’ll go through each.

Architecture: I know a couple of Arch students who live on my floor and they seem to be enjoying it so far. It’s definitely a lot of work and there isn’t a lot of wiggle room in the schedule, but if you plan carefully and work with your advisor from the start you can definitely make room for a second major.

I know nothing about the French major…so I’m not gonna say anything on that.

German: I’m currently taking a junior-level German class and the German program at the U is one of the best in the nation. There are a ton of different kinds of language, literature, history, and culture classes you can take and quite a few options for study abroad. However, I will tell you, I was surprised to find out I won’t be getting actual German professors until next semester (which will be my sixth total), but the TAs are all really nice and have a very strong background in German.

CDES is an awesome school, but I will tell you it is primarily female dominated, whether that’s good or bad is up to you. It also has the fashion majors, etc, so you’ll have quite a few intro classes with them.

CLA is a huge college, and you won’t be able to expect a lot of direct attention like you would be able to in CDES, but if you get into the french or german programs early you should be able to find people that can help keep you on track.

So, essentially, the U is gonna be a great choice for the majors you’re looking at. The social situations are what you make of it - and by how it sounds, you’ll definitely make the most. If you’re looking for especially crazy times, try to get into Territorial. If you want it to be quiet(er), look into Middlebrook or Comstock.
