Chances (INT'L), please!

I know you’re probably getting tired of answering the same question all the time, but I’m not from US so it’s really hard for me to tell. Please, be brutally honest :-) NYU has always been my dream school…

I’m actually graduating from high school this year but for some reasons (it’s a long story) I’m planning on taking a year off and trying to NYU next year.

I’m a white female form Europe.
Very good high school in a big city.

Trying for CAS – Economics / Politics

I went to three-year school to the class with extended level of History, Social Science and Math (we can’t choose classes individually).

GPA: (1.00-6.00 scale) 1st year – 4,93, 2nd year – 4,86, 3rd year – 5,00
Rank: 2 (/~700 students) *
ATC: 32
SAT I: 2240 (CR 750, W 730, M 760)
SAT II: Lit 730, World Hist. 750, Math IIC 740
TOEFL: 109/120 (iBT)

I really hope they will take it under the consideration since my GPA looks really bad for people who don’t know our grading system (5,00 is actually REALLY good)

ECs (nothing special, unfortunately):
- finalist of Human Rights Olympiad
- school paper for two years (one as editor)
- volleyball team
- class president for a year
- girl scout (leader of a group of about 20 girls), organized a lot of outings and trips
- a lot of charity work
- volunteer helping children with their school work
- summer job in one of the EU institutions

I have nice recommendations from teachers and people I worked for, but nothing impressive here either.

I got a few great scholarships that basically cover everything I need (YEAH!!!) so I’m not applying for any FA.

BTW: I would really appreciate if you recommend me a couple of schools for safety choices. Preferably in a big city (NYC and Chicago would be the best). I’m kinda lost since I’ve never heard of most of them so all I can base on are rankings – and I don’t trust them.

Thanks a lot!

With your stats, if you write a good essay, NYU should be no problem. Your EC looks great! Plus, if you do extra work during your year off, you can put that on as well.

For safeties, I’d suggest Fordham (Bronx)or Northeastern (Boston). You should also try Boston University, Boston College, University of Chicago, Northwestern or Columbia. The first two would be a high match, and the latter would be reaches/low reach. I don’t know how to judge your GPA, but your standardized scores and EC are great, and if you write a great essay, you should try some of the reaches.

Edit: most of these other school have a very different atmosphere/campus than NYU. Make sure that you like both the school AND the campus before making a decision. What, other than good academics, are you looking for in an university?

just curious, what country are you from?
