Chances: Low GPA, High Test Scores

Wanting to keep a long story short, I'll just say that high school really wasn't the most pleasant experience. I went through tons of bullying, tons of problems with people at my school; simply put, it wasn't a place I wanted to be. I dreaded having to wake up every morning and go to school. Axiomatically, that reflected in my course work. My guidance counselor knows about this and she recommended that I stay in touch with the admissions counselors at the UF and that's exactly what I've done. I told them the entire situation I was in for most of my high school experience and they keep on telling me that at this point I should put a lot more effort into my holistic portion of the application, but obviously, it's not their place to tell me the chances of getting in. I have three very well respected teachers (one of them was my AP United States teacher and she has the highest pass rate in the state for the course: 94%) who have committed to writing their application for me, trying to give a teacher perspective that the GPA doesn't reflect my knowledge/intelligence. Here are the stats:

GPA: 2.5
ACT: 28
SAT: 1790
Class: Junior
Ethnicity: Hispanic
In-state Student

AP Tests: Biology (2), World History (4), Spanish Language (5), United States History (took this year, I'm confident I got a 4-5), English Language (took this year, passed definitely), Comparative Government & Politics (took this year, passed definitely)

You should be fine. If the situation with your GPA has been explained, then it should not weigh you down too heavily. Did you submit all of your AP scores? They are quite good, and show you to be better student than the grades do. The Extra Curriculars look a little weak, but that might be because you haven’t specified how many hours you spent in each activity. Most schools put a premium on Hispanic students, so I’d imagine you would be just fine.

Well, your ACT score is pretty good, but i don’t know if its that good that it would make up for the GPA…UF’s middle 50% is ACT 28-32 and SAT 1830 - 2090. UF takes AP classes into consideration for its own GPA calculation, which should raise it in their eyes. But honestly, unless your UF GPA is significantly higher i don’t think you’d have the best chance of getting in, i saw a lot of people with similar or slightly better stats get rejected this year. You have pretty good EC’s and stuff, but i don’t see anything that really makes up for the lack in stats.
I’m going by the 2011 freshman profile, if you were wondering where i got the stats.

High test scores?

UF doesn’t take teacher recommendations…

What they said ^^^ And you should try to raise your test scores if you want a shot at admission, they are below what UF accepts. I know people with much higher scores that were rejected.

You’re pretty much screwed unless your test scores jump a bracket or your gpa gets decent. UF is notorious for just looking at people on paper (statswise), and not holistically

Yep, got that right. Those are not high test scores, I know someone with a 2070 SAT with 4.2 GPA rejected from UF.

@hacker4life

Yet there are people accepted with 1600+ SAT, 23+ ACT, and/or even 3.5+ GPA. It’s a holistic admissions.

Just see if you can raise your test scores, get leadership positions early in senior year and: WORK-ON-THE ESSAY

ChickenWing221 - Thank you for your post. My daughter would really like to go to UF. All of the posts on CC seem to imply that she won’t get in without stellar test scores. It is nice to hear someone post that they do use a holistic approach.

Do they give extra weight to a student who comes from 2 alumni parents who have been active in the UFAA for 20+ years?

@MomofThree95

Lol no problem. Honestly, I would not exactly take what most people on college confidential say as “accurate”. Much of its speculation and many people say their opinions or hypothesis as facts. College confidential is good for just casual discussion but nothing more. It shouldn’t be a source of information unless there’s links and unbiased posts.

Anyways, a student with 2 active alumni UF parents has a legacy status. It’ll definately have some extra weight. Make sure your daughter improves on whatever she can and have her work on the essays! If she is interested in innovation academy, you can look at the IA website. Picking IA or summer does NOT make it easier to get into UF. If your daughter wants summer, she should pick summer. If she is truly interested in IA, do IA. If she wants fall, stick with fall.

And really do focus on the essay it’s so important lol
