I'm a junior right now and I want to major in mechanical engineering. My weighted gpa right now is around a 3.3. I plan on getting a 4.0 weighted next semester and getting A's in a summer course at a community college. This will hopefully bring me up to a 3.66. I took the SAT's and i got a 1900 on it. I was in wrestling for 1 and a half years. I quit halfway in the season because one of my relatives was going through chemo and it was a very hard time for me. I was in key club and fit club for 1 year. I have around 200 service hours. I also started working part time at an auto shop i don't know if that helps.

The GPA is going to make it a reach.

sorry about your relative.

What is your “UC GPA”? That is a-g courses (no PE, no “life skills”, etc.) only in summer after 9th grade through summer after 11th grade. 9th grade grades don’t count. Unless you are a recruited athlete, URM, or have overcome tremendous hardships, the GPA is going to be well outside the “un-hooked” applicant range for UCSB. Ave. weighted-capped UC GPA for UCSB is about 3.9, and ave. SAT is about what yours is – around 1800 SINGLE sitting.

All I can say is try to get the best grades you possibly can 2nd semester Jr. year and in the summer.

Unfortunately, in the UC’s internal admissions criterion weighting system, GPA is #1 in importance. For Engineering, the Math portion is weighted more heavily than CR or W… so I hope your Math is over 700 just to give you a chance, and that you’ve gotten As in most of your math courses. Unlike some private schools that will take a 3.3 weighted GPA if the SAT is very high (i.e. 2200), UCs don’t normally risk that.

I haven’t finished my junior year yet so right now it’s a 3.3
