Chances Me- Penn State

Chances at Penn State University park:
-3.65 GPA
-Upward trend
-1120 SAT, I know they don’t superscore but 1150 superscore
-Great Personal statement essay
-Great EC and Activities
-Really good recommendations
-Applied Undecided
-Applied for fall and checked summer option
-Brother currently attend Penn College (Legacy)

I am more than willing to do summer session chance me please!!

Checking summer option and undecided is helpful. GPA is in the ball park. SAT a bit low for University Park.–usually look at over 1200. They don’t take Legacy into account . They get approx. 60K applications for University Park. .Remember summer term means paying for another semester. Good luck!!

Bump

They do consider legacy but only when you are borderline and it only helps a smidge. You applied DUS and summer option which is the best you can do. Your SAT is a little low but likely enough for summer session.

Chances at Penn State University park:
-3.1 GPA
-1310 SAT, superscore 1330
-Applied Undecided
-Applied for fall and checked summer option

hoping for university city with altoona as secondary

@1013daniels With a 3.1 it is unlikely that you will get into the UP campus. You will get into the Altoona campus however, which is a great campus nearby UP. Your SAT is good, but it only accounts for 1/3 of the decision with GPA being the main deciding factor. No one can say for sure as PSU does strange things some times, but as a general rule, under a 3.4 GPA is most likely to be admitted to a commonwealth campus and not UP.

Bump

@jlhpsu 3.4 you are referring to , is it weighted or unweighted?

@sulu I would assume the 3.4 is out of a 4.0 scale - which is unweighted. A 3.4 weighted GPA is B’s and lower - which isn’t terribly competitive.

3.4 is basically the minimum to have a shot at UP.

@MYOS1634 3.4 Weighted or Unweighted? 3.4 with harder rigorous courses is not the same as 3.4 with easy courses right. Does penn admissions take that into account.

@sulu 3.4 UW is usually the minimum for UP campus. Sometimes you will see someone with a 3.3 with high test scores get in for summer. But in general, 3.4UW is the minimum for UP campus.

Unweighted with math through precalculus or calculus, 4 years English and social science/history, all three from bio, Chem, physics, 3+ years foreign language, and 4 other academic or art or tech classes.

It was my understanding they used weighted but that Penn State weights if according to their own scale. Would be totally unfair not to consider weighted. My son goes to the highest rated public school in PA and takes all honors classes that are extremely rigorous. His UW gpa is lower than his brothers who attends a private school but who had only taken 2 honors classes. My oldest is the more qualified student due to his course selection & shouldn’t be penalized for attending a more competitive school & taking more rigorous classes. If this is the case why wouldn’t everyone opt for the easier classes to pad their GPA?

Because students with the easier classes don’t get in at all.
The expectation is good rigor AND good grades.

I applied for the summer session at UP.

Major: Microbiology
GPA: 3.8 UW

AP classes: 6 (AP Euro, US History, Bio, Chem, Spanish, English)

Strong personal statement

I feel like everything is good except for my SAT score. I’m so nervous!
Standardized tests have always been hard for me, however in the classroom I have an A average on most tests.

Did you retake in December?
Do you take precal honors?

Question on SAT scores for PSU- I keep reading admissions does not Superscore. My daughter’s SAT scores were 120 points difference from 1st time she took them to the 2nd time. 100pt difference in Math, 20pt difference in English. How does that work? Do they look at all scores? TIA for any input.
*She has or 96avg uw, 1360 on sat from 2nd test, 8AP, 2 honors, 3 SUPA classes senior yr, applying to engineering dept. I’m stressing for her

They’ll take whichever total score is higher. For engineering, expectations would be a high Math score.

I did not take them in December. My first score was in May, and I got 1000. I retook them again in October and scored 40 points higher. I also did not take precal honors but took advanced geometry and am now in college algebra. I also forgot to mention that my current rank is 27/294 which places me in the top 9-10% of my class.
