Chances MUCH needed! Northwestern/Duke Transfer Fall 2018

Hey y’all, I don’t really know how CC works but I’d love for someone to chance me!
I’m planning to apply as a sophomore transfer to NU-I visited this summer just because (late, I know), but after starting college I realized I should’ve applied as a freshman. However, there are always second chances! As for Duke, I applied ED last year and didn’t get in, and might try again.

Ethnicity-don’t know if it should matter: Hispanic/Asian (specifically Filipino)
High School GPA: 93.00
ACT composite: 32
HS Activities: Was super involved in theatre (had leadership positions, this took about 30-35 hours a week), also was an Ambassador/speaker, took a lot of time on weekends to take care of my disabled twin sister (always put this in the activities section)
Completed two dual enrollment courses at a local university with a 99% average: Contemporary World History and Humanities 1

Currently a Freshman at Tulane University! (roll wave)
Taking 15 credits: Chem 1 + Lab, Calc 1, Sociology (Deviant Behavior), Psych 1, Freshman Seminar (Music/Culture in New Orleans)

Plan for Spring Semester (18-19 Credits): Chem 2 + Lab, Cell Bio OR EBio + Lab, Music before the 1800s, English Writing Intensive, and Dance (Jazz 2/Musical Theatre Dance)

I’m currently a prospective Neuroscience (BS)/Music (BA) Double Major, but I’m not sure if I should declare that on my app. Is it better to show more direction as a transfer?

Since the semester just started there have been no changes in my GPA, but I have to maintain a 3.5 for my scholarship here at Tulane so can’t drop below that!

I joined the Tulane Music Performance Organization (which I am performing for this year), the Asian Society, Pre-Med Society, and Tulane Neuroscience. I applied to be part of a community service group, but no word on that yet.
In my first month here I have taken part in Outreach (the biggest community service event of the year), and will be a group leader for Girls in STEM (an event to teach girls from K-12 about STEM), and a volunteer for a STEM event in the greater New Orleans area.

If there’s ANYTHING that can help me, please let me know! I know my scores are pretty low but I plan to write a killer essay…hopefully that shines through! Thanks again-I know this was long!

If anyone has insight on how admission officers judge transfers, that’d be great to know too!

Hi @treem99,

I have been researching the transfer admissions process a lot because I too want to transfer! Since I’m in this process too I don’t know if I can answer all of your questions, but I DO know that schools look for more direction from transfer applicants. They want to see what their school offers that your current school doesn’t – ie what professors, research opportunities, courses, and programs you would benefit from at their school that you don’t have at yours. The more specific is better, so I say go ahead and include your major in your essay.

I do know that as a sophomore year transfer they rely on your high school grades a lot more than they would if you were a junior transfer, because they don’t have much of your college transcript to go off of, so I’ve heard it’s unlikely to be accepted to a school you were rejected from senior year of high school (unless something drastically changed in your application since then). To help, I’d say limit EC involvement to only two or three clubs in which you can be heavily involved, rather than participating in many as just a member.

Hope this helps! Good luck
