Chances! Need some confidence. I'm very afraid.

I am an Indian male and graduated high school on 2012. I have studied under a State Board. Here are my brief stats:

Academics:
9th 89.3%
10th 91.5%
11th and 12th combined (Yes, combined) 94.4%

SAT 1:
1st try 1910 (520CR 770M 620W)
2nd try 2050 (590CR 720M 740W)
SS 2100 (590CR 770M 740W) -- I know these are very low. I tried but failed to improve my CR score :(
SAT 2: Math L2 800, Physics 780, Chemistry 750
TOEFL: 109/120

ECs: (Absolutely nothing in 11 and 12th)

a) During 9th and 10th:
1. School Head Boy (=President of Student Council) in 10th and House Vice-Captain in 9th
2. Math and Science Cub President
3. English and Debate Cub President (School anchor for three years, also won many debates in the SCHOOL)
4. School Cricket and Volleyball teams Captain in 10th and Vice-Captain in 9th. We have some six branches of our school at different places across the city. Our Cricket team won the competetion in my 9th and 10th. Our Volleyball team lost the finals both those years.
5. National Cadet Corps--attended annual camps, A-Certificate->this is not so great, I know.

b) During Gap year:
1. Math and Science tutor for middle-school and lower secondary school
2. Karate Assistant Instructor--Black Belt
3. Member of a local Youth Association--incredibly active in welfare and development of people and community.

Essays are probably very good. Recs are awesome.

Applying to: (need financial aid)
Cornell
Columbia
Yale
Dartmouth
UChicago
Yale-NUS
Middlebury
Trinity
Colby
Union

Prospective major: Engineering/Sciences

Can I get accepted in any of these colleges? Am I dreaming high? Should I concentrate on Indian competitive exams? BTW I got admitted into IIT-V (previously IT-BHU) for Biochemical engineering. I didn't want to go there and also, I don't like taking that engineering course. SO I took gap year.

Why did you apply for engineering if you did not want it? What are you doing gap year?

I said I don’t want to study bio-chemical–more specifically at IITs where there’s not much scope for such courses. This is the reason I took gap year–to apply to US univs and also better prep for the IIT-JEE

I am staying at home studying for standardized tests and IIT-JEE. And I have been doing a few things which were mentioned in the actual post.

I am a co-applicant, and I am not that experienced to chance you for the top schools. But I feel that you have very good chances at the last four colleges in your list.

PS We have similar usernames! I am afraid too. Hope this acts as a bump and you get better advice from senior members and others. GOOD LUCK!

Thank you @hopingforbetter…Anyone else? Some help/advice please…

Bump Bump Bump!

As hopingforbetter said good chances at the last 4 colleges, slim chances at the remaining ones. You being an international student(and that too from India) and applying for financial aid will further bring down your chances.Sorry for being blunt, but don’t lose hope,it all depends upon the competitiveness of this year’s applicant pool and you might even get lucky and get into some of those tough schools! All the Best!
P.S : Good SAT’s but EC’s could have been better.

@venkatasuhas Thanks. And yes, I too wish I were better in extracurriculars. I was a serious IIT-JEE aspirant until my 12th. So I’ve given up all the ECs. Damn! I’ve given up my favorite Karate too. I have won many National Championships until my 8th grade. I’ll start my competitions again in April 2013–but it’s too late :(

BTW my first school (until 10th) sent good number of students to US top grad schools like UChicago. But my second school (11th and 12th) has never sent any. In fact, it’s a newly established school, and I am a part of its first graduate class.

Its ok boss…chill out!!

You’ve already applied. No point of a chances post!! Cause you can’t change your chances - whatever they may be!!

One thing struck me though …

If you’ve been able to get that across to the adcoms and you’ve actually done something brilliant - then you’d have a better chance!! :)

^hopefully:)

Applying to: (need financial aid)
Cornell: no chance
Columbia:no chance
Yale: no chance
Dartmouth: no chance
UChicago: no chance
Yale-NUS: extremely small chance
Middlebury: extremely small chanceTrinity
Colby: you have a shot
Union: you have a shot

Admission to universities in the US is getting more and more competitive every year with a great number of applications from countries like india and china. To top that, you need financial aid which reduces your chances by so much.

Alright, so I’m actually a high school student in the US, but I have family in India hoping to attend school here in the future.
Just some stats for some of my friends who applied to some of the same schools you did:
Yale: she was 7th in a class of 700 and had a 2380 SAT, with a 12 essay. 1st place nationally science olympiad team
Chicago: top 5% in class of 700, 2340 SAT, 11 essay, and 1st place nationally science olympiad.

I’m not trying to get you down, but those test scores aren’t going to get you into a top 10 school in the US. However, some of the other schools lower on your list are probably more likely to accept you.

i would say, you have a good chance at the last 3 colleges of your list.
middlbury accepts like 3-5 indians an year, and all of the them have a spectacular app with perfect grades, SAT scores, etc.

So aside from the slightly low SAT score , if you’re applying to the top tier of colleges you will need to elaborate on why you took a gap year and how you made constructive use of it. As far as I can see, there isn’t really much you did that adds to your app so you might want to focus on that a bit.

@betterhope

I though you were good to go to atleast the last four univs, but others’ comments show that I’m wrong!
Sorry for a wrong assessment. Good Luck!

@xNorth22 Is there any specific place to explain the gap year activities on the CommonApp? I don’t remember anything like that. There is a place to actually mention the reason for taking gap year. Or am I missing something?

I would advise you to apply to more liberal arts colleges, which are in top 20 according to the US news worldreport.
