Chances (not in top 10% of class)

My S is not 10% of his class (just in the top 3rd decile which is all his school reports)
He has OK Grades (3.8 weighted), good class rigor (will have completed 10 AP courses by graduation)
He is an AP scholar with distinction,Good test scores; 1550/1600 SAT, (800M, 750CR) SAT subject tests (Bio 790, Math II 800)
Good ECs (Varsity XC and track all 4 years, academic team, etc… lots of community service)
Wants to study Engineering
Chances?

While your S’s test scores are strong, he will be competing with many others that have similar scores but higher GPAs. At my S’s local accepted student event, he was told the majority of accepted students had never seen less than an A in high school.

I think he has a good chance. I was deferred REA and accepted RD this year with a 34 ACT, 3.9 UW GPA, similar AP courses, and EC’s. You can look at the results thread on here to get a look at the profiles of the accepted students. The one thing I would urge him to do is to make contact with his regional admissions counselor into the winter to demonstrate interest - that is surprisingly a large factor in admissions I felt like. 3.8 Weighted? What’s is UW GPA? I’m afraid the GPA will be a killer… especially for engineering? Is there an explanation for his grades? Does he not apply himself? At a competitive school in a very competitive major, I think it may be a stretch. Certainly worth shooting for, but a reach. :frowning:
