I'm a sophomore (almost junior) at Georgia State in the Film/Video program, but I'm planning to transfer and would like to go to school in New York. I'm looking at City College of NY and UT Austin for film, but my interest is actually screenwriting and NYU's Dramatic Writing program is incredible. This is a rough list of my credentials/bio, and if you have any advice or knowledge (I'll apply for Spring'12) on NYU, Tisch, my chances, other schools, etc. it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

GPA: 3.55

Some sports in high school, but no EC's with GSU (commuter).

Plan on getting a letter of recommendation from a theater professor I've had for two classes.

hmm 3.55 is good, but not great. If your portfolio is excellent, your GPA shouldn’t matter that much as long as it’s above a 3.4 or so. Sadly, Tisch doesn’t take transfers for Spring semesters, and the deadline for Fall 2011 transfer was April 1st. Guess you’ll just have to apply next year for Fall 2012…Or you could apply to NYU College of Arts and Sciences for Spring 2012, and then internally transfer. If you have more than 30 credits, btw, your SAT scores don’t need to be sent in.

that sucks! i appreciate your help though. looks I’m gonna have to find a third option. there aren’t a ton of schools that specialize in dramatic writing.

I applied to Tisch as a transfer student for Dramatic Writing. I’m still waiting to hear back from them. It’s so agonizing!

I think your chances are good though. I would say your GPA is fine, and half of their decision is going to be based off of your writing portfolio (a professor at my current university got his PhD from Tisch in 2009, and he said they mainly look for creativity and narrative skill).
