Hi.
I am currently a Junior in high school and recently received my ACT score.
The score was: Composite: 30
Math: 30
English: 32
Reading: 30
Science: 26
I was just wondering, what would my chances be of acceptance to top Computer Science programs?
I am looking into the University of Illinios at Urbana-Champaign as it is my state flagship.
Other potentials I was looking into included Carnegie Melon, UMich, Stanford, MIT, Berkeley, and other recognized programs, strong in CS and Engineering in general.
Assuming I maintain my GPA (4.0) which incorporates AP courses, what are my chances.
I've also:
played tennis for 3 years
Chess (3 years) (three time state qualifier)
Academic team (3 years)
Student congress
sports editor on newspaper
volunteer at hospital
engineering presenter at John Deere Works (HQ)

Additionally, I am from a middle class background and am a South Asian Male

Don't sugarcoat it. From what I have been told, and what I believe, my ACT is a killer. It destroys my chances.
Please, And Thank you.

UIUC - Match
CMU - Reach
UMich - High Match
Stanford - Reach
MIT - Reach
Berkeley - Reach

You don’t have outstanding EC’s, so you need to have a 32 ACT to be very competitive at UMich and a 34 to have a reasonable chance at Berkeley and Carnegie Mellon. MIT and Stanford are crapshoots.

I forgot to mention that I’m part of NHS and Link Crew. Although, I doubt that makes a big difference. And isn’t UIUC engineering really elite? I was told that I need atleast a 33 for entrance. And thank you!

Alright, thanks. Appreciate the response. I’m thinking that I’ll just retake the ACT a few times, maybe even the SAT to open up the coastal schools.

Work to improve your scores, they are rather low for a potential CS major. Also consider taking the Math II subject test, if you do well it will help your application.

Alright, I was thinking about taking the SAT’s and respective subject tests as well (Chem, History, and Math). As for my ACT, I’m not quite sure what I’m doing wrong. I understand the material. I do fairly well on the practice tests (31-33), but come time for the actual test, I completely butcher it. Hopefully I don’t encounter the same issues with the SAT. Thanks for the input!
