Chances of Acceptance?

I went on a tour of UMass Amherst yesterday afternoon and I have to say, I fell in love with the campus. I've applied to several other schools, and visited the Northeastern University, UConn, and Conn College campuses before touring UMass.

Anyway, here is some of my academic information. Could someone please give me rough criticism or an opinion on my chances of getting in?

High School Senior
Out of State (Connecticut)
GPA - 3.26
SAT I - 1650/2400 in March, 1800/2400 in October
Member of nine clubs/organizations throughout all four years including Student Council and Debate.
School Newspaper EiC.
Perfect Attendance up til this year.
Honor Roll all four years.

I'm going to study Major in Japanese and am contemplating a dual major with Computer Systems Engineering as my second.

Thoughts?

You should get in.

Over the past few years, UMass has seen it’s average GPA increase…still, I think you’re a solid applicant with your ECs, especially the leadership positions. I think you’ll get accepted. Best of luck.

Is your GPA weighted or unweighted? 3.26 weighted is below the midpoint, although your SATS look really good. If you are not applying to the Engineering School I think you are it good shape, engineering might be a little tougher.

I think a dual major with engineering will be nearly impossible to do in 4 years when there will be so little overlap between the two degrees. It looks like a language degree requires 60 language-specific credits ([Undergraduate Programs in Asian Languages & Literatures - LLC - UMass Amherst](<a href=“East Asian Studies at UMass : East Asian Languages and Cultures : UMass Amherst”>East Asian Studies at UMass : East Asian Languages and Cultures : UMass Amherst)), an engineering degree requires 110-120 math/science/engineering credits (http://www.ecs.umass.edu/public/ece_docs/undergrad/cse_2013v01.pdf</a>), plus the gen-eds… you are looking at 180-200 credits in only 4 years. If you could even schedule this, the workload would be crushing. Plus I would think for a language degree you would want to study abroad for at least a semester, this will totally derail an engineering degree, where the classes are very rigidly ordered. And, if you accumulate more than a certain number of credits, you start paying extra at OOS rates.

I don’t mean to be discouraging, maybe you can pull it off… you won’t have any time for fun though.

It’s a weighted GPA; most of my classes have been honors and AP.

That input is exactly what I was looking for before going off to college and I really appreciate it. The truth is, I’m not entirely sure what I want to do in the future. I have experience with computers and I figured an engineering degree would be something reasonable to pursue and would provide a someone decent chance of employment in the future. Japanese however is a passion of mine that, while having no practical use outside politics, translation, and/or teaching, is something I would never want to miss out on the opportunity to learn.

I’ll have to put a lot more thought into how I want to go about taking classes if I get accepted. Thanks so much for the information!

I would think being able to speak a language like Japanese would be quite valuable for business, and possibly engineering as well.

If you are serious about a double-major of some sort, I would recommend you talk to someone at the school about it. Don’t take my word for it, I’m just a parent. ;)
