Chances of Admission to the University of Texas Cockrell School

Hello, going into the summer before my senior year I am having a lot of anxiety towards getting admitted to my dream school, The University of Texas Cockrell School of Engineering. It has been my goal major in Petroleum Engineering, however finding resources concerning admission to that school and major has been difficult. I have put my resume in a link below as a word document. If you can review it and tell me my chances I would be highly appreciative.

Upload Resume

Or if you don't want to use the link I have a watered down resume below:

Class Rank: 71/605
Weighted GPA: 5.2 (out of 6)
All AP

SAT: 2030
-Math: 690
-Reading: 670
-Writing: 670

SATII:
Chem:740
Math2:640

EC: I would say very good
-President of Interact Club
-Former Public relations officer of Engineering Club
-Vice President of Band
-4 Year Varsity Marching Band member
-NHS member
-Academy Ambassador (We help teachers and the school district develop job prep classes like business classes, engineering classes and what not)
-Job shadowing at a local Petroleum Exploration Company
-Tutored independently as a job

Any opinions would be great!

Your test scores are good but your chances are limited by your class rank. Cockrell is hard to get into even for UT auto-admits.

You’d be academic auto-admit at TAMU.

If you’re really set on UT you can increase your chances in holistic review with even better SAT scores.

You’ll be offered CAP if you don’t get in based on holistic review. Given your rigorous courseload in high school you should get in after a year of CAP.

Hate to say it but you will likely not get in. Cockrell itself is difficult but petroleum engineering is considered to be among the hardest majors to get. I think they only have about 90 spots available for the major. Try to get your SAT to around 2100+ and try to get into around the top 5%. Good luck!

Hey Jamcafe, I know my rank is a weak point, would it make any difference if that is my rank at a really competitive school (Westwood)? Its like #5 in the state of texas public or private.

I think competitive high schools all have this problem with rank of very good students. I don’t think your school’s top 5 rank will help. Not much you can do about your rank now but you can improve your chance for Cockrell by improving you SAT M score.
