Chances of An Average Student

Hey everybody. Northeastern is my absolute dream school and it would be amazing if I could get in. However I am aware of an immediate drawback; my GPA. Does the rest of my resume help in make up for it, or am I a lost cause?

Academics - 3.6 GPA (Weighted), predicted 3.3 - 3.4 for unweigted
- Within top 15 percent of my class
- Honors Courses throughout 9-10 grade (My school does not allow you to take AP classes until Junior year)
- Junior Year, took AP U.S. History and Government (5's on both)
- Senior Year, AP Psychology, Biology, Calculus, and Literature (expect 4-5 on all of them except Calculus)
- Multiple Honor Roll and Achievement Awards
- 1980 SAT, 2030 Superscore

Extracurricular - Captain of the Cross Country and Track team for two years. (Made first team all county, have good enough times to be competitive with both teams)
- Student Government Class President
- Creator and leader of our school's Humanitarian Society (aims to teach students about inequality and injustice in our society and provoke action against it)
- Quiz Bowl Team Captain
- Part of the Heroes and Cool Kids organization (brings high school students to elementary and middle schools to educate them about sportsmanship, bullying, and drugs)
- Intern at an up and rising SAT/Tutoring Institution (Prixcel Prep) for dramatic increase in SAT score
- Volunteer Middle School Cross Country Coach

Personal Information - Being an ethnic minority (hispanic) to an incredibly low income family (single mom, under 20k, currently unemployed), I haven't had the time to partake in many more EC's due to my commitment to my listed activities and part-time minimum wage job I've had to take to help pay for rent and other expenses. (24 hours a week for the last 3 years, am currently Assistant Manager.) It's gotten to the point where I have to get another job and will be working 4-6 hours ever day of the week. Will this hook be enough to clarfiy the reasons for my rather low grades? Thank you for anybody's time!

What major are you planning on applying for? That’s a really big factor, I got accepted into the business school and I have quite a few friends with higher GPAs than me that didn’t get accepted into more competitive majors like Pharm and Bio.

I’m probably going to go for Psychology, as it is the field I would like to follow in the future.

Your stats are by no means bad. As a minority from a low income family, Northeastern does have some scholarships, like the Torch scholarship, that you might want to look into. I think you stand a decent chance, especially if you explain the situation in your application. I guessing you’re applying RD at this point?

Dear mc,

I believe that if you explain and reflect on your socioeconomic situation, you most certainly can make it to NU. I understand that your family cannot afford to pay NU’s tuition costs, and I am certain that NU would help you out. Again, I strongly emphasize that you show them what you have learned from your situation, do not just simply state it and expect pity, but you really must allow your maturity and leadership (according to our ECs) to shine out. Your SAT superscore is fine, not the worst and not the best! Your rank is fantastic to! I find it quite impressive that you were able to maintain good grades with everything else you have going on.

Stay strong mc, if it’s your dream, go for it! I am a EA accepted applicant, and although NU was never my first choice, the more I look at it, the more I love it. I will be visiting next spring!

Work super hard on those essays mc!!!

Go Huskies!
