Chances of Being Accepted to CAL?

CCC: Santa Monica College
UC Semester Units: 67.5
GPA: 3.7~3.8 (UC transferable courses)
Major: Political Science
EC's: Part-time jobs (not held for entire CCC attendance; about 20 hours/week)
Misc: All of my required lower division requirements will be fulfilled by the time I transfer but not by the time I apply in November.

Can anyone help me?

you have probably read/heard this thousands of times, but... focus on your essays (ucb/ucla are pretty much the only ones who read them). Have the lit and math portion of the igetc completed before you apply this nov? (im pretty sure thats a BIG deal for berkeley) try to have all the prerecs for your major done before the summer you transfer.

to give you some hope...
im transferring this august with a 3.8 (psychology) and my friend with a 3.7 (political science).

good luck with your applications!

Thanks man! I wish you and your friend the best of luck on your acceptance to CAL

you definately have a chance. thats a very good gpa. your essay could make the difference.

Yes-Sir-Ree. Your chances are good. Try to stick out among the crowd with fabulous essays. I think that is what gave my application that extra fairy dust.

As for me, I'm going to berkeley this fall (less than two weeks - eeps) with the following stats:

3.7 GPA - IGETC completed - Work Experience - English Tutor & Intern for Record Label - English Literature Major

Good Luck, O'Course!

<3,

Update:

EC's: working part-time at a law firm in the summer. I have the same law firm lined up for spring 06' in which I plan to work full-time or at least part-time since I'll be taking 2, maybe 3, classes at this time which would conflict which my work schedule.
IGETC: will be completed by fall 05' when I apply to CAL and UCLA.
GPA: aiming to hold a 3.72 by the time I apply in November :eeps:
Major requirements: i will have completed 2 out of the 5 courses (Political Science 1 & 7) needed to satisfy the lower requirements of my major. By Winter 06' I will have completed 2 more courses (Political Science 2 & 51) and the last course completed along with an additional class by the end of Spring 06' [Math 52 (Statistics) & Japanese 3].

Here is a run-down of my intended schedule:

Fall 05'
Japanese 2 (minor req.)
Geology 1 (to satisfy IGETC)
Political Science 1
Political Science 7
Total: 14 sem units

Winter 06'
Political Science 2
Political Science 51
Total: 6 sem units

Spring 06'
Math 52 (Statistics)
Japanese 3
History 12 (pending; req. for CAL)
History 25 (pending; req. for CAL)
Total: 14 sem units

***Question: Do you think I should fulfill the lower requirements of CAL or UCLA? I intend on going to CAL moreso than UCLA but I feel that my chances are better for UCLA. Do you think I should fulfill all the req's of both UC's just to be safe?

The important thing for me to do is complete my lower major requirements ASAP while concurrently achieving a high GPA in those classes. This is going to be tough :sigh:.

bump, bump bump it up!!!

So I decided to stick with majoring in Political Science. I was still wondering if I should complete the pre-req's for CAL or UCLA. I feel that I have a better chance at UCLA (for obvious reasons) but would really like to go to CAL. I'll have a 3.75 by the end of Fall 2005 so I feel that my chances of being accepted to CAL are mediocre which is why I'm leaning towards UCLA. The thing is, I'll be applying to two different majors, as legal studies / political science major for CAL & as political science major for UCLA. You can see that I'm pulling myself into two different directions. I can either fulfill the pre-reqs for CAL as a poli sci / legal studies major and forget about UCLA or vice versa. What do you guys suggest I do?

Here are the list of pre-reqs for my intended major based on my preferred choice of courses in each discipline. I put an asterisk next to the courses that I've already completed. The rest I plan to take in the Winter or Spring sessions.

Legal Studies Pre-reqs -- CAL
- Math 52 (Stats)
- Econ 1 & 2*
- Phil 7 (Logic)
- Hist 1

Political Science Pre-reqs -- CAL
- Poli Sci 1*
- Poli Sci 2
- Hist 12
- Hist 1

Political Science Pre-reqs -- UCLA
- Math 52
- Poli Sci 51
- Poli Sci 1*
- Poli Sci 2
- Poli Sci 7*

**NOTE: I originally intended on working/interning (it's basically a paid internship) full-/part-time at a law firm I have lined up for March until school resumes in August. The thing is, the school I want to transfer from is SMC (Santa Monica College) which is in LA and my work is one hour away in Orange County. Taking classes at a closer CCC such as IVC or Saddleback College would the defeat the purpose in me going to SMC. I chose SMC because of its high transfer rate to UCLA.

I don't think your chances for Cal are necessarily "mediocre." Why do you say "legal studies / political science major" though when you cannot choose an alternate major for Cal? By the way, legal studies is not a good preparatory major for law school.

With that said, the competition for social sciences at Berkeley is definitely significant--22% admit rate. With UCLA, you are probably a match. It's a tough one. Yeah, I don't know what else to say.

The admissions people cannot and do not factor in colleges--like "oh wow, SMC, great school, her grades are worth more than this other student!"

They only factor in colleges in the sense that different classes and prereqs are unavailable to certain students at their respective colleges. You could easily go to IVC or Saddleback or another OC CCC for classes.

ccc : Irvine Valley College
Units : 68 by end of the Spring
GPA : maybe 3.97 ( including this Fall ...)
major : Economics
Major prerequisite : already completed
IGETC : will be completed by end of ths Spring
EC's : work at Bookstore for 6months...
National dean's list
PTK member..

The thing I worry about is that I have few EC's....am I a strong applicant? my chance is 50%??or less?

Hi ivc7000. First off, what is the national dean's list-is it real? Secondly, how could you see your chance as 50% or less when you have just about a 4.0 and all the prereqs completed!?!?

Cal is a public college that gives priority to students transferring from CA community colleges. ACADEMICs are the TOP factors in admissions. Your chance is good, obviously.
