Chances of being admitted into Washington and Lee as a transfer

Hi! How do you think I stand for transferring into W&L? I did not apply for first year admission.

My stats:
Current College: Big SEC School
Applying as: Rising Sophomore
Intended Major: Poli-Sci

High School GPA: 3.4-3.5 I think
College GPA: 3.95 (2 A+)
ACT Score: 34
Credits: 37
Midterm: 2 A+, 2 A, 2 B (looking like a 3.8-3.9)

Hooks: Deans List, Honors College, Sibling at W&L

ECs: Interned for 2 senators junior year and senior year, in a sorority, club field hockey, was captain of squash team senior year, paid brand ambassador on campus, honors college, full tuition scholarship, in competitive and distinctive honors program separate from honors college.

What do you think?

I think you sound great, but I wonder, even as much as I love W&L, why you would give up a full tuition scholarship at your current school?

@katespeare My parents don’t really want me to transfer for that reason because I intend to go to graduate school but I just love W&L and the alumni network to me is almost impossible to beat.

Why would you give up a full tuition scholarship ? Also, with 37 credits as a freshman, I assume that many are from AP courses taken in high school & wonder if they will be accepted by your new school.

Why not take advantage of your current situation (credits & scholarship) to double major ?

Also, since you are currently at a big SEC school like Alabama, you have an advantage of easier grading than you are likely to encounter at your target schools. Grad schools like high GPAs–especially law schools & medical schools–regardless of where earned.

I have applied to W&L as a transfer this spring, but I decided to cancel my application. I have hooks: URM, hispanic female, veteran, low income, first generation. I like Virginia and Lexington is a great city. I’m republican myself and feel fine in Lexington. I am applying from NOVA.

I filled an application on commonapp website and submitted it. Was ready to submit my SAT(800 math, 720 verbal and writing) and my transcript but Nicole More, associate admission dean, sent me email DISCOURAGING me from applying to W&L due to “very few transfer students are admitted and rarely with any financial assistance”. I was like??? I’ve applied to UoR, Amherst, Williams, Davidson, Smith, etc. And all of them were encouraging due to my so called “hooks” I guess but W&L doesn’t admit that many students and doesn’t provide transfers financial aid so it’s hard to afford.

Is it so called white supremacy? I don’t think so. It’s a different case. They are looking for transfer students with money who can pay for thei education rather than for another recepient of their financial aid. It’s funny because University of Richmond already sent me an admission letter and gave me generous gift of money to cover their tuition (52k) while W&L (or Nicole More) simply told me not to apply. It’s up to you. I’d go with your current school or if you

@Petruccio

If this is true, this is beyond the pale.

W&L is literally on the hunt for qualified URM students. Don’t believe me - read this article - https://www.wluspectator.com/home/2018/3/27/a-preoccupation-with-diversity

Perhaps, they are only looking for freshman or certain types. I do not know. But, I would think they would roll out the red carpet for a student with your numbers and story.

@knowledgegood

I saw this and other articles about diversity at W&L, but I assume they’re looking for freshman applicants and give them Johnson scholarship which is not for transfers.
I asked general admission question by email and suddenly received that weird feedback from Nicole More. It was odd to hear that my chances are slim and financial aid is poor for transfer applicants. I sent her couple emails to verify that it applies to me because she’s international admission counselor. I told her I graduated from high school outside of the US but have US citizenship and she confirmed her previous statement. It turned me off. I’ve applied to more than 10 LACs and already received couple offers. It was just weird to receive such discouraging email from admission person after reading all those articles.

Anyone know when W&L releases transfer decisions?

My son is waiting to hear as well. I have a feeling it will be within the next week.

Apparently, decisions begin to come out tonight at 8 pm! Good luck everyone

Yes, good luck all!

Anyone get anything?

Not yet…

Waiting … Strange they would say decisions are coming out tonight and then nothing.

Still waiting

Nothing

rejected

Rejected as well! Best of luck to all
