AM HOMESCHOOLED
Im going to be applying to Cal Poly SLO, UC Davis, and UCSD as CS major, what are my chances of getting in?
GPA:
4.4 weighted
3.9 unweighted
SAT:
1480 (Cal Poly superscore: 1500)
Math: 780
English: 700
Subject Tests:
Bio E: 730
Math 2: 790
AP:
Chem: 4
Gov: 4
Because I am homeschooled I have taken a lot of CC courses:
Microecon: A
Macroecon: A
US History: A
Precalc: A
English (1st semester): A
Calc: C
Music appreciation: A
At this point I just want to know how much the C is going to impact my chances. I slacked during the semester I took Calculus and I know the C does not look good.
I forgot to add this in the post:
At this point I don’t think ECs matter but here they are:
Job as a lifeguard at a waterpark.
1st chair cello at youth orchestra.
Part of 1st place swim team.
At highest level for cello and played in honors recital and honors orchestra.
- You need to calculate your UC GPA’s: Unweighted, Capped Weighted and Fully weighted. UC’s use 10-11th grades for their GPA calculation in the a-g course requirements. SLO uses 9-11th grades for the a-g course requirements. You can use this calculator for both: https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
One C will not make a huge impact but calculating your GPA’s will help gauge your chances.
- SLO admits by MCA points and major. CS had around a 5% acceptance rate last year with the School of Engineering average SLO GPA of 4.21 and SAT of 1481. Also SLO does not consider SAT II subject test scores unless you are using the subject tests to fulfill an a-g course requirement.
Here is the MCA calculator: https://mca.netlify.com/
MCA points of 4700+ are the minimum threshold for CS/Engineering majors.
SLO and all the UC’s do consider your EC’s, GPA, Test scores, HS course rigor in their application review. Your personal insight essays will also be Very important in the UC application review.

CS has become one of the most competitive majors at the UC’s and CSU’s and you have no safety schools on your list. Make sure you identify 2 safety schools you are willing to attend before forming the rest of your list. UCD looks like the best target school and UCSD/SLO are definitely possible be should be considered slight Reach schools.
