Well, I've been looking at the merit scholarships provided by Temple and I meet the requirements for the President's Scholar but barely. I really need this full ride and I'm wondering about my chances of getting in. Also, do chances of better scholarships go up if you apply early?
Here are my "stats":
GPA: 4.13 (weighted)
SAT:
Math 670
CR 710
Writing 720 (Essay 10)

ACT: 32
Math 35
English 29
Reading 32
Science 32
Writing 9/12

I took SAT II's but it was pointless since I didn't study and did terribly.
Math Level 1 740
Math Level 2 640
Literature 660

I just finished my junior year and have taken in total 5 AP classes, I'll be taking three more my senior year. I've done well in all of them, if that helps me. I know AP scores don't factor into admissions.

As for community service, I've only done a couple things. I volunteered at an elementary school to help run the kids' carnival/fair and worked at "beautifying" my school under a foundation. This is because I am in the National Honor Society and as of next year I'll be the secretary of my year's chapter. So tons of community service will be done in my senior year, just not soon enough to show up on applications.

I'm also aware that the National Merit Scholarship helps. I don't know if I made the cutoffs but I was notified by my school that there was a chance. I got a 212 on my PSAT and I'm from PA. So I'm pretty sure I'll at least make commended.

I've never posted here, so if I posted in the wrong place, posted something no one would reply to, or whatever; I'm sorry. I've just been wondering about this a lot. if I can save my parents money it'll be awesome. I also would appreciate tips to make my application stand out/ to make my chances at scholarships become higher.

Hey, I’m a current temple student that has a merit a scholarship. My best advice is to work on your essay and make you sure you convey your interest in Temple. If you can, try scheduling an honors day visit. From what I have heard, if you have the profile and a strong essay then you should get the scholarship that you qualify for. Also, you should look into applying to schools that meet full financial need because you have stats to potentially get into top schools like UVA.

Well, this has been posted awfully long ago, but I found it while searching this forum. If anyone was interested or curious, I did get the full tuition scholarship. If anyone was wondering about his/her stats, I think you should just check that link and assume they’ll look at your grades objectively.

I know this is really something to call about but since I’m here does anyone know if the core academic + language GPA for scholarships is weighted or unweighted?

Yes, saintkid will likely apply for fall 2015 - I’m just trying to get a handle on what the automatic merit might be and it seems that every school calculates GPA differently. He is on the edge of several categories depending on weighting. - I just have to remember to call during business hours, although I imagine they are swamped with kids for this year a the moment. I was skeptical about my ability to get someone on the phone.

SAT score: 2160 (1410 for CR and math)
(will take ACT in september: hopefully 34+)

GPA:
unweighted: 3.78
weighted: 4.12

extracurriculars (throughout high school):
President of Red Cross Club
Cross Country for 3 consecutive years
Classical Dancing for 12+ years
Biotech internship
Red Cross internship
Volunteered at a summer school for Special ed kids
Broke record in Guinness World Records

@lightning17 I don’t know if you’re serious but if you are, yes. You have a great chance at getting the scholarship. My unweighted GPA and my combined CR + Math score were about the same as yours and I was awarded the Presidential Scholarship. I didn’t have as much extracurriculars as you did (not nearly) but I think the scholarship is more about academic achievement than anything else.

you just make a normal application. if your test scores and GPA are in the scholarship range, the admissions office automatically reviews your application for the schlolarships. i think there is link earlier in this thread as to how admissions does this and what the scholarship ranges are. last year, they were automatic so check Temple’s admission page to see if that is still the case.
