As of right now, on-campus rising seniors get to pick rooms first on March 8th sometime between 4pm and 9pm.
March 9th = rising juniors 4-10pm
March 10/11th = rising sophomores 4-10pm
March 12th = off-campus students (lol owned)

Yeah, I have no clue how this is going to work, given I just got here as a spring semester transfer. I’m a rising junior, and I got the 4:40pm timeslot on Tuesday, but I feel like any rising seniors are going to snag up all the singles (including those in suites) right away. Luckily, one of my transfer buds is a rising senior who got a 6pm slot, so I’m gonna bug him to pull me in…haha.

What sucks is you can pull in up to 5 people (including yourself), but if you’re blocking with more than 3, two people have to be in a room together (either a suite double or a hall double, the latter of which my floor in Becker only has like…2?)

I really would like to live in a suite again (I’m in the double in a suite) but I’d also like a single, haha. We’ll see how it goes. What’s lucky is, I was told that a lady in my building can swing us transfers some slack and let us, at the very least, stay here in Becker next year since we didn’t get a chance to play the in-house lottery during the fall semester. I’ll see if that’s true once I find/contact her.

But again, getting the suites (or at least the singles in them) is probably going to be tough. I also heard that by declaring you have a variety of allergies or asthma, that you get to pick rooms ahead of everyone on like, February 18th. First off, what!? Second off, I guess it kind of makes sense…but still, those kids are just going to use it to their advantage to snag good rooms that have nothing to do with being allergic to anything. (Proof being, two girls at dinner last night told me that’s how they got suite rooms in Becker last year, haha.)

Quick question: If our plan to get a suite/a block of rooms in a new dorm fails, what are the chances of grabbing a single in Lyon with an 8:40 timeslot on the first day for sophomores? I was hoping it’d be a viable backup plan, assuming Lyon isn’t a very popular dorm…?

Also…what do you do if you’re blocked with a bunch of people but want to split up from the group if you can’t find rooms together? You can unblock and then log in during your own timeslot, right?

^—The latter half of that confuses me too, just in case I end up blocking with 2 or more friends (that include girls), I won’t be able to get a suite. If I block with just guys, we can do that, but I’d like to know if I change my mind that I can get out of it if need be. There’s going to be an info session on how this whole thang works on Tuesday, February 16th in Robert Purcell (2nd floor auditorium) that’ll show us how the selection process works. 7-7:30pm and 8-8:30pm.

As for Lyon, I’d actually say your chances of getting into a suite there are pretty good, but idk if you’ll fit all your friends in. You might get in, but…yeah. Even the gothic suites, I imagine, are probably snatched up nicely.

Yeah…definitely planning on going to that info session.

If we’re not able to get a suite (or block of rooms) in a new dorm, our individual preferences are quite different. I think I’d prefer Lyon over any other dorm (I want to be on West, I want laundry facilities in the building, and I like Balch’s living environment so I assume Lyon is similar), but one friend would like to be in a language house, and others may prefer one of the dorms in Ctown like Cascadilla (everyone was pretty much anti-gothics). Which is why I really hope we’re able to un-block during the choosing process if things don’t work out. I figured I’d also have a better chance at Lyon because I’m only competing with other girls, not guys as well.

See for me, I haven’t chosen my block buddies yet. When you choose, does it lock it or something? Like you can’t just go on and unclick people as block groups?

When you choose block buddies, you basically request roommates on your online housing form. It’s not currently locked…as of now I’m able to delete accepted roommates if I want to.

I hope you find at least one block buddy with a great time slot! Our earliest one is 5:20 which I thought was good, but apparently probably not good enough :[

I think it would be pretty easy to get a room in Lyon. I had a somewhat early slot last year, but certainly not the first one, and I there were quite a few different singles I could choose from, on a few different floors. (there were some singles in other gothics as well.) I know a few Lyon singles went in the in-house lottery, but the majority of them did not.

Thanks for the info, faustarp! Are you living in Lyon this year? I know I said we refused to live in the gothics (and my blockmates are still very much opposed to them) but upon second thought, Lyon might actually be a good 2nd choice for me. My 8:40 timeslot seems pretty late but hopefully it’s okay.

Getting one of the nicer houses with 4 is gonna be a stretch…
Most people that do that separate themselves along a hallway.
If you have a good slot, you can prob find a suite. Though you need 1 more person I believe for that.

Suites are pretty much gone after the first two timeslots, I think There may be a few rooms open, but I wouldn’t count on finding a complete suite. We had a group of 5 hoping for a suite with a 5:20 timeslot, but we’ve pretty much abandonned that idea. It’s also made more difficult by the online system itself, because you can’t search for available suites…you have to try your luck by picking a building and then picking a block/section, which can be very time-consuming. I hope they revise the system soon, because it’s really ridiculous.

although it’s not the best kind of revision, wherein one could get a sense of the rooms available at a glance (as is possible at the in-house lotteries), it’s probably good to note in this thread that Resolution 13, the change in the order of class priority, has now been signed. starting next year rising sophomores will have first choice, then rising juniors, then rising seniors.

class of '12 and class of '13 get the short end of the stick on this one, but I think it’ll prove a good decision in the long term.

Yeah…it will be a good decision in the long term, but as a member of the class of '13 I can’t help but be disappointed. I feel like it’s basically forcing us to move off campus as juniors, because who wants to try their luck in the housing lottery after all of the rising sophomores fill up West Campus?

Haha, it sucks worse for us in '12. But then again, if I manage to acquire rooms in Becker again next year, we’ll be fine for senior year (should I get the in-house lottery safely.)

If not, an apartment nearby wouldn’t be too bad…I’ve also heard a few good things about Sheldon Ct. which is nicely placed right near Ctown but not too far from West dining/facilities.

I’ve picked two people for my blockmates, one guy/one girl, the guy is a rising senior who is going to pull us into his timeslot on the first day. Although it’s at 8pm…if we’re only looking to grab three hall singles near each other, is that going to be hard to come by?

We don’t want a suite anymore since a) too late of a timeslot, b) its on senior day, so they’re won’t be any open anyway, haha and c) nobody wants a double.

Wait…so even though rising sophomores go before rising juniors and seniors next year, the in-house lottery still occurs first? Because in that case, the new system wouldn’t really be forcing anyone to move off campus (I don’t think)…

Since you guys are going on the very first day, I’m sure you could get all singles. But don’t you have to have a double with 3 or more people?

The in-house lottery only applies to students who are already living on west campus. It already happened, actually.

So yes, current sophomores+ who are already on west campus have the ability to stay on west campus, it’s the others who wanted to get onto west campus who are screwed.

Also, not everyone gets in through in house. There are less than 60 rooms open per House I think, whereas over 150 on the list.

And you only need a double if you are blocking with 5 people, not 3+.

ohhh, I see. So yeah, current freshmen who will live on West next year won’t have an in-house lottery…

In the housing brochure, it says that “if your group consists of three or more students, at least one room in your block must accomodate more than one person (i.e., two students blocking together may select two singles, but three or more students blocking together may not select all singles).” The guy at the housing info session said that they want to prevent larger groups of students from taking all the available singles, but perhaps this only pertains to rising sophomores? Not sure.
