Choosing not to live in the sorority house, my time slot for the West Campus housing lottery is on March 10 (first day) at 5:20 pm. I believe there are 4 or 5 time slots before us.

What are the chances that my 4 friends that I plan on being suite mates with will get our own suite?

Probably not very good. I think me and my friends had the 4th time slot and by our time, they were almost all taken, as were most of the singles in the new buildings.

Might this year be different though, since rising sophomores get to pick before juniors and seniors? Last year it was slim pickings for sophomores. My daughter’s friends had a relatively early time slot and ended up in Cascadilla. (Which is not necessarily a bad thing.) Hopefully the new system will make it easier for sophomores. :)

Actually now I’m not sure. The above poster mentioned that she had the “first” day on March 10th, but the first day of room selection is Monday, March 8th, so I guess that means they are doing it the old way, with seniors and juniors on the 8th and the 9th. What happened to sophomores first?? Is that for next year? If that really is the case, then I would have to say that the original poster has virtually no chance of a suite with friends on West. The way the housing lottery has been done is brutal for sophomores.

Aw man…I’m in the same position as mariambaby…same timeslot and same housing preferences! If we can’t get a suite in a new building, how about a bunch of singles (or a double and some singles) in the same hallway? I guess it would be okay if we split up a little bit, but we’d like to stay together if possible and also refuse to live in the gothics. lol

^Oh, bummer! I was hoping my soon-to-be freshman daughter would have had a better housing lottery experience than my older daughter, who is living off campus as a sophomore. Great apartment, I just wish she could have lived on campus for 2 years. I think that by junior year students have had enough of dorm life, so I think allowing the sophomores to go first, especially when Cornell only guarantees housing for two years anyway, was a good idea. I guess there’s still hope for next year!

also, I don’t really see why you would refuse to live the gothics. I honestly can’t relate to the avoidance of them. the rooms in some of them are pretty big, they’re the closest to the slope, and it’s certainly not like they’re falling apart or anything.

We toured the gothics in Flora Rose and just didn’t like them at all. Everything was gray and dark, hallways were scarily narrow…going out for dining is fine, but having to go outside for laundry facilities didn’t sit well with us. We just didn’t get a good feeling from them overall.

there’s laundry in Lyon, which is connected to Mennen, so both of them have easily-accessible laundry facilities.

I agree, countryangel, that we are not all going to have the same preferences, which I am totally fine with. I just don’t want anyone to be TOO quick to dismiss them, but since you have first hand experience your judgment makes good sense for you.

I will be the CC resident gothics enthusiast, I suppose. I’ve been in most of them at one time or another.and I think they’re cozy and interesting.

What actually happened was the resolutions were passed (Res. 13-15) by sponsor VP Nikhil Kumar, but then when passed on to Skorton to be signed off on (all resolutions that either modify the charter, appendix, or campus code of policy required Skorton’s signature to be approved), Skorton rejected the resolution, saying that being passed mid year would put rising seniors who planned to live on West at a disadvantage.

The resolution has then been tabled for this month, and is expected to be re-passed and signed by Skorton with the implications of it being instated next year; basically next year sophomores will pick before seniors, but this year seniors will stick pick first.

I didn’t agree with the decision, but what Skorton says goes.

You mean “rising juniors”…sophomores now? If the resolution is put into effect next year, then no, they will never get a first shot at on campus housing. As it is now, it seems they have the second best times to select housing, after the current juniors.
