Chances of getting accepted

Hi my name is Samir Hussain. I am currently at montgomery college and have completed 36 credits in two years. I recently applied to college park as an undecided major having completed most of the political science and government courses MC offers. I have completed English 101, 102 and 201. However, i have still not been able to complete the math section, currently taking a pre req course at MC and i should be eligible to complete the math course at maryland if i am accepted. I have a cumulative gpa of 3.0 and have done an internship at a law firm. I sent in my essay with a recommendation for the government and politics programme at CP. I applied as an undecided major as I am not sure if i want to major in business or the government and politics programme. I was also accepted at American University but was unable to go as it proved to be too expensive. I am wondering if I have any chances of being accepted even though i have not completed the math requirment section. I have also taken 12 credits this semester at MC including Econ 202 business 101 and MA099. Please let me know if i have any chance of making it to CP at all.

Are you a MD resident (as defined by UMD’s rules about time, etc.?) Is your gpa of 3.0 from MC? If yes to both, you have a good chance of being able to transfer to UMD.

Yes i have been living in maryland for 2.5 years now. im just worried that they may reject me as i have not completed the math requirement. what do you think? do i have a chance? i was thinking about considering umbc as well incase CP rejects me. And yes my gpa is 3.0 from mc

can someone please reply? i am very nervous about my chances, any suggestions would help me immensely

300 views and nobody will give me a suggestion? Come on guys, really need the help here!

I tried to reply earlier, and CC wouldn’t let me. Exactly what math requirement are you referring to that you don’t meet? From the umd.edu office of admissions page (via search), it says you need Three years of math, including algebra I or applied math I & II, formal logic or geometry, and algebra II. A fourth year of mathematics is strongly recommended.

These are the basic maths of most high schools everywhere, I thought?

If you don’t meet these, I agree you may have a problem, but I am assuming you do?

Otherwise, you should have a good shot at transferring.

Yes i’m referring to the MA110 or higher requirement at umd. I have completing the course MA099 which will enable to take MA110 at umd or anywhere else. I had a big problem with math all my life which is why i struggled with it till college. But i should be eligible to take MA110 after i complete MA099 which is intermediate algebra here at MC. apart from all that i feel that i have enough to take me thru to CP. But do you feel they may reject me based on one class which i will be able to fulfill next semester? do they have a zero tolerance policy over the math requirement?

Samir,

A friend of mine didn’t fulfill his math requirement and therefore was rejected from UMD when he tried to transfer. However this was after a semester off (he hadn’t started classes at MC yet, so he didn’t have his EN101/102 credit either). I’m not sure what admissions will say but I’m sure that having that math credit plays a huge factor in getting into Maryland. However I think you’ll just have to wait and see. Best of luck!

You would certainly want to say that you are taking the class next semester, and they may make your transfer contingent on passing it?

yeah i did mention that i would be taking the required math class next semester. lets see what happens. what do you guys think about umbc as a school, its definitely not better than CP but incase i dont get into CP il prolly have to join the Poli sci department of umbc. not really satisfied with that as umbc is mostly a research school but at this point i have no other option. anyway, really appreciate the opinions guys! thanks alot!
