Chances of Getting in?

Hi, like everyone else I'm also wondering about my chances of getting into UW Seattle. UW is my dream school and I'm aiming to get into their DXARTS program.

I'm an Asian American female living in California and in-coming senior, Class of 2015.
My overall GPA is 3.83 (Weighted) & 3.72 (Unweighted).
My community service hours is only about 30 to 40 hours.

Straight up I'm telling you my SAT score is very low and I haven't taken a lot of APs/Honors, which I do indeed regret not taking.
My SAT score was only 1470 (480 Reading, 520 Math, 470 Writing, and 9 on the Essay). I plan on taking it either one or two more times.
I also plan on taking the ACT.

Honor Classes I've taken are Geometry, Algebra 2, and Chinese 4 (which is the class right before AP Chinese)
The AP classes I've requested to take senior year is AP Calculus AB and AP Computer Science.

Extra information would be I'm in a class called EMP, Electronic Media Production, which is a 2-year career preparation program that integrates Language Arts and Social Science with a multimedia and video production skills. I also have a future Internship at Namco Bandai at the start of senior year. I was also on the badminton team for two years. I have prior knowledge of editing with programs such as Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, After Affects, Final Cut, and Sony Vegas for about 2+ years, depending on the program.

I know I probably have either a low or 50% chance of getting in, but I would still like other people's opinion as well and thank you in advance!

Your chances are not very high. Your GPA is ok but your SAT score is very low and you have limited community service.

Since your SAT score is probably what will drag your application down the most, I would advise you to study for and take the ACT before you attempt the SAT again. Or at least take some ACT practice tests and see how you go before sinking a bunch of time into improving your SAT scores.

Other than that, your GPA is good. Unfortunately I don’t know enough about how UW considers community service to say whether your low hours will be a problem…My husband got in as a freshman with next to no community service hours, but he went to high school in another country where community service in school is just not a thing.

Your GPA looks pretty good (though it depends what classes you were taking). If you were taking all the core classes: math, English, social sciences, and science, then you have a pretty good chance (though it would be better if you took it to honors or AP).

Your SAT is okay… but you shouldn’t worry about it that much.

And for any outside activities, it doesn’t matter much about how many hours you spend doing community service. After all most people usually do NHS just to put it down on their application and they will just check it off. What they are really looking for is commitment and how you play a role (that’s what you want to put down on your essay).

An example would be me taking the time and years to enroll in the concert and symphony orchestra during my school years (elementary to high school), being there to participate, to enjoy and learn, and being able to find meaning to it, how it overall changed my life and how it developed me as a person.

Yeah, I didn’t do much tutoring or helping the old and such. I was committed to clubs and did whatever I could to spread the message about what we believe in and how we could change the world.

So overall they look at your character. Sure you can be a typical person who has a nice GPA and an okay SAT, but what they really are looking for is what you can do for them. What do you have to offer? They’re looking at your character, not the numbers. They believe those with a strong character can truly make a difference.

Right now, I say you have… like a 5/10 right now to get in. But if you were spending a lot of time helping your family or community and not given a lot of time to study, or if you were in a personal situation that caused you to fall back a bit but then you decided to get back in the game, then that’s where your optional comment goes. Sometimes there is a reason why people aren’t getting the “high numbers,” but laziness, drugs, broken hearts, depression and such are not great excuses! They want strong characters, not those with any mental influences that may have ruined their life.

Well, I wish you good luck. Think about yourself, make a change this year. Discover your past and how you could benefit others. Anyway, I hope this helped!

retake the SAT; they use the higher score. even if you do worse in one area; but better in another; they use the best of each area. so its always better to retake the SAT; even if you did well.

This is if you still have time; some areas dont hold SAT tests often.

buy a big SAT prep book; and do all of the practice tests. Get a SAT tutor if you can afford it.
The UW mainly looks at your math score of the SAT; so ask your math teacher for help. the SAT should be up to pre-calc
