I’m a little white girl from Utah whose dream is to go to byu…and I wanna know what my chances are of getting admitted. My GPA is a 3.62 and my ACT is a 27. I got straight 4.0s all of my junior year, but the reason why my GPA is so low is because I was on dance company my sophomore year and I was also taking multiple honors and ap classes. In August of my sophomore year I suffered a severe knee injury and went through many months of physical therapy. Then in April, right after I was healed, I hurt it again, so badly that I had to get reconstructive leg surgery. Because of the major surgery, I had to miss about two weeks of school (including the ap exam) and I couldn’t walk for about 3 weeks. My grades plummeted in result of me still having to go to all the dance company practices (even when I couldn’t walk), having the rigorous coursework I had, all the physical therapy and countless doctors appointments, and plus just being depressed because of my dance career ending and me not being able to do what I loved anymore.
My junior year I basically had to branch out and try many new things, so I joined theatre. I competed at the Shakespeare festival in the improv competition. I also went to the Utah Theatre Association conference at Byu. I got involved in the key club (an international community service club) and was historian my junior year and I am now the president. I also am in mandarin classes and competed at the BYU Chinese language fair in the conversation competition and got an “excellent” rating. I’m involved in my school’s Chinese club, drama club, and key club. I am also on my school’s peer leadership team for next year and on seminary council as well. I plan on graduating with an academic letter and emphasis honor chords in Math and leadership human interaction and communications (advanced studies). I plan to complete my copper service award (100+ hours of community service). I’m currently laurel president and have served on the stake youth committee. I also have my young women’s medallion. My initial ACT score was a 24, but I took the BYU ACT prep course and bumped it to a 27, and plan on taking it again in June and in September as well.
BYU is my dream school and I know my GPA and ACT are below the average, but I just need as much input as possible to know if I should even bother applying. Thank you!!
Wow this is longer than intended. Bless whoever takes the time to read this whole thing. Haha!
Im pretty familiar with the admissions at BYU, all my sibilings (talking about 3) graduated from there. I even got accepted last year but didnt committe.
So, according to the collegeboard website you are in the 25th percentile of freshmen. If you pull out a little bit more in your ACT score like to a 29 then I will say you can get in easily. Your activities are strong, and (I guess you are mormon) if you write something about being involved in the church in your essay then I will say you are in.
P.S Just to say I got accepted with a ACT 27 (wayyyy weak ECs, wayyy weak essays, and nothing but some church activities, but the thing is that I´m international)
P,S,2 I still remember that day when one admission officer told me if you went to a mission and then come back with ACT more than 24 then you are completely in. You can write about serving maybe, I don´t know
If anyone was wondering, I got in. I raised my ACT to a 28 and worked very hard on my essays. Never give up or let anyone tell you you don’t have a chance!!
