VT does not admit directly to engineering majors. Engineering admits are in a pre engineering program. A 3.0 college GPA is needed to enter a major, with lower GPA students admitted by GPA if there is space available.

Actually, yes you have to apply directly to engineering. You cannot get in under “undecided” and later say you want to major in engineering.

But you would be admitted to general pre-engineering, not computer engineering, and then have to pass the GPA threshold to get into computer engineering.

Ok, then I guess the thread should read “what are the chances of getting into Engineering at VT”?

Are you / have you not taken any AP calc or science? If your school offers it and you havent taken them, then honestly that could really be an impact on your application as those are things the engineering admissions takes note of.

@Hokie_gl32 taking AP Statistics now, AP Calc not offered, already had AP Physics junior year, H chemistry, thanks for your input.

Mean HS GPA for engineering in 2017 was 4.11 and SAT of 1339. I don’t think you are far off the mark. If you took the highest math available at your school not taking AP Calc won’t be held against you. Hopefully your essays really reflected your fit as they will probably have an impact since your stats don’t put you on the higher end. Are you IS or OOS? Being IS from somewhere other than ultra competitive NoVa might help.

The above are correct but I wouldn’t call it pre-engineering. You are accepted into General Engineering and pick your specific field later. This is a good thing, however, as you may be introduced to other fields that may interest you and not everyone knows the difference between CE, EE and CS as much as they think they do.

@123Mom456 IS and from very small rural town west central VA, thanks for your input.

Good Luck and Go Hokies!
