Chances of getting into Georgia Tech?

Hey guys so I am applying for the fall semester at Georgia Tech for International Affairs. Throughout highschool I have take 11 APs and 4 Duel Enrollment classes (Civ II, English Comp II, Biology, and Physcology).
AP Macroeconomics
AP Microeconomics
AP Calc AB & BC
AP Environmental Studies
AP Comparative Government & Politics
AP Gov
AP US History
AP World
AP Lang
AP European History
I am a major history buff and love anything to do with social studies. I understand for GT I should have taken more science/math oriented classes, but I didn’t realize that till this year. I have an overall 3.75 unweighted and a 3.85 weighted GPA. My ACT scores: Composite-29, Math-28, Science-30, Reading-31, English-25, Eng/Writing- 27 ( I know these are low, but curious to see how they would balance out with the rest of my resume) My extra curriculars include Mock Trial (Captain), XC (Captain), Lacrosse (Captain and won state), Swimming (Captain) Leadership camp counselor (6 weeks every summer in the mountains), started my own business creating corn-hole boards (sold over 100 units), Senior Student Council member/leader, and President of National Honors Society. Thoughts?

Thanks!!!

You certainly have taken a lot of AP classes. But your ACT is low for GT. Are you in state or OOS? Is there any chance you could take the October ACT to try and raise your score? I think you can still register for it until Friday. I think you have a good chance but it would be better if that score was higher.

I’m in state! And I’ve already signed up for the October ACT. Whats a “safe” score that I should be going for?

What crazy weighting scheme would not give you a bigger pump up for all those AP classes?

What did you get on those AP tests? You have CalcBC which is pretty heavyweight. The only concern is you will be taking freshman chem and physics without HS prep (maybe,. just guessing) if you are pursuing STEM.

And what are you planning to study? History or core STEM. My only concern would be that attending GTech would be less optimal if you decide not to go the STEM route, but then again at in-state prices it’s a terrific school.

I’ve gotten 5’s on most of my exams except for AB which I received a 4. Our weighting system gives us 5 points for AP and 3 for honors, but for some reason it hasn’t give me a huge boost like it has for most students. I’m going for a major in International Affairs & Economics, which would put me in Ivan Allen Liberal Arts College if I was accepted. They have programs through Emory that I can take (and still pay for GT in-state tuition) which is what has drawn me more towards GT than UGA.

5s on 10 APs will impress people and also will earn you a AP National Scholar award.

Plenty of math and science for a liberal arts major and sounds like a great program at a great price.

Still everyone needs a backup plan, so pick some nice safeties that are financially reachable and maybe a reach school as well. You are definitely merit material with higher ACTs.

You should pull in a much higher ACT score with a retest. Study for the test, get lots of rest, eat a healthy breakfast, and knock one out of the park.

You’re literally fine. You’re instate, have calculus, a ton of college level courses, and applying to the liberal arts college. I think you have a great shot currently. Also you only need two lab sciences so environmental science or biology shouldn’t be too bad at tech.

Unless they have change it GT only looks at the Math, English, and English/Writing sections. So I would look at trying to increase your Math and English scores.

A 29 in math is like a 650 on the SAT.
Your English/writing score is like a 610 on the SAT.

I am unsure about the English to SAT Reading conversion. However I would think you should try and get that 25 up. That should raise your english/writing score. Remember to look at the online information about how they have changed the writing section of the ACT. It changed starting with the September ACT.

Good luck with the ACT! You should be able to bring those scores up. I’m also curious as to why your GPA isn’t higher with all the AP’s you’ve taken. Are you applying EA? I would apply EA, but expect to be deferred to RD. They will probably want to look at those first semester grades. Are there many other students from your high school applying? My daughter is a freshman at GT. She went to a large and academically strong high school from the north Atlanta suburbs. She had a 34 ACT (33 M 34 E), 14 APs and a 4.22 weighted GPA. Plus the requisite ECs, honors, recs, etc. She got in EA. But, her best friend from the same high school had a 34 Composite (35M 33E), 3.95 weighted GPA, 9 APs and strong ECs, didn’t get in. She was deferred to RD, then wait listed, then extended weight listed. She never got in. Her sister is also a current student at GT. I’m not at all trying to discourage you, I’m just pointing out that there are so many factors other than test scores, strength of curriculum and GPA. I know of students from other, less competitive Georgia high schools that got in to GT this year with lower numbers than my daughter’s friend. So, where you fall within the context of your high school is also important. Also, I know that you aren’t required to send SAT II and AP scores, but they are listed on the factors that they consider. My daughter sent everything to them. Her friend didn’t. Best of luck to you!

I ended up getting in!! Thanks for the advice guys
