chances of getting into Harvey Mudd?

I am an arts school student who applied to Harvey Mudd.
I play Oboe and have pretty strong recommendation letters (I think).
My SAT score was 1960 and 1440(which translates to 2060 to 80). GPA is about 3.9 (unweighted).
SAT II scores were 800 on both chemistry and math II.

My SAT II scores are strong enough, but I am worried about the course load, since my school only offers 2 AP courses (Stats and Calculus AB), and I am taking Calc AB right now.

Do you think I have a pretty high chance for Harvey Mudd?

Harvey Mud is a very selective school. They look for high SAT scores as well as high GPA and the rigor of your classes. If you want to have a better chance at getting in, you should try to raise your SAT scores to a 1500. Also, if you were to tell me your EC’s I could have a better chance of determining your fate. Good Luck!

Your raw SAT score won’t be good enough for Mudd. Maybe try and retake that, if you can. Also, if Oboe is your only EC, that won’t be good enough unless you’re really accomplished. While both your sat IIs and your UW GPA are at or above what mudd is looking for, your WGPA, test scores, and ECs may not be what they’re looking for. You have a chance at mudd, but it’s not a high one. Chance me back for mudd?

If you got into MIT early admission, any thoughts on how that might reflect on chances of getting into Harvey Mudd regular decision?

I have a friend who got into both MIT and Harvey Mudd… I think you have a good chance if you fit well into liberal arts side of Mudd as well!

A student who is competitive for MIT will be competitive for Mudd. But while Mudd is strongly focused on STEM, they also care that their students have a broader view of the world and other interests as well. They may not see that in every student accepted at MIT. So it isn’t any guarantee of getting into Mudd. But it does imply that your test scores, grades, and STEM ECs are strong.

For the OP, my kid (Mudd senior this year) also went to a HS with very limited AP offerings. Just Calc AB, Stats, and two foreign languages, and students were not allowed to take them until senior year. But my kid had some pretty solid STEM ECs that demonstrated an interest and aptitude for STEM. You chances certainly will be affected by whether you have a more STEM focused set of ECs. The oboe is nice, but unless you can show that you really have a STEM interest as well, it might be tough to get in. Your test scores also sound a little low for Mudd.

@USAStudent06 What did he base his final choice on?

@intparent Thanks. Actually my daughter’s EC are titled away from STEM due a lack of these. More along the lines of Senate, debate, Civil Air Patrol, track, cross country, a couple of clubs, along with RTOC scholarship selection, acceptance to ND’s summer leadership program.

@tintininamerica, generally I think women have a slightly better chance in a situation where they have fewer STEM ECs. Just because sometimes women come later to STEM activities. But none at all could be a challenge. She needs to convince them that she really wants an intense STEM focused experience in her application.
