Chances of getting into the Honors College.

Ok so i am a student from North Carolina wondering what my chances are to get into honors. I have ok numbers. 1380 sat and 3.7 gpa. I also received the out of state tuition waiver a few days ago.

I know the two do not actually have anything to do with each other but do people who get the out of state waiver usually get into honors? Or is honors much harder to get into?

If you get an out of state waiver, you should get into the honors college, to gain acceptance to the honors college, you need to have an SAT of 1320 or ACT of 30. However, typical people accepted to the honors college have an SAT of about 1400 or over, ranking in the top 3% of their high school class (according to the web site). It depends on the incoming class strength though since they take 250 freshman into the honors college

Did you apply to Honors???

My son is in Honors at Clemson . . . I’d think you’d have a good chance although your class rank is more important than your GPA in determining whether you’ll be considered. And your essays and letters of recommendation can make a difference as well.

Yes just a reminder, the honors college application process at Clemson is separate from the admissions process so you need to complete a separate application for honors available on the honors college website

Do you wait until you are accepted to apply to the Honors college? My son hasn’t received any info on an OOS waiver so maybe he wouldn’t be a candidate. He did have a ACT 33, SAT 1350 but his UW GPA is 3.5 (W 4.2) and he is 12% in class rank.

No, you can apply for the honors college whenever, I would apply anyways since you never know! The deadline for applying is March 1st (all materials need to be in by March 15th)

What would you say the chances of these stats, Pierre?

1400 SAT
top 6% or 7% of the class
3.75 GPA

I’m not sure how much they base admissions off of the essays, but I’m confident that I could write some very compelling, original ones.

I’m thinking of applying, but if there’s no chance then I probably won’t even bother.

Your SAT is definitely at the average of honors college students so that gives you a shot at getting in. Your class rank is a little bit low but if your high school is strong and since your GPA is good you can definitely get in. If you can write some good essays and get some good recommendations, the better chance you have. I would definitely give it a shot for sure.

Hmm, alright. I have a question, though. Unless I’m missing something, is there any real enticement for the Honors College? No scholarships, no weighted GPR, but you can…take out library books for a longer period of time? LOL?

So mad because my last post got erased when I submitted it last time so here’s a shorter version of what I wrote.

Here are the benefits of being in the honors college:

In my opinion, the honors degree is just a something to put on your diploma. From what I’ve heard, honors classes aren’t necessarily harder than regular classes (in introductory english, the honors students were even talking about how they had less projects/major assignments than regular students did). However, if you do get into the honors college there are some great perks that you should take advantage of like early class registration. You have no idea how hard it is for freshman or sophomores if you get a bad draw in class registration (order is randomized each time) to get into elective or even core classes required for your major. If you don’t get into the honors college, you won’t get those perks but it’s still worth attending Clemson since the educational experience won’t be all that different. Just my opinion from someone not in the honors college, maybe some other people feel differently.

My son is in the Honors College and he feels it’s a great experience. He lives in Holmes Hall (the Honors dorm) which is the newest dorm on campus that freshmen may live in. I believe it’s also the only freshman dorm that’s suite-style.

He loves his Honors classes - they’re much smaller and more interesting than his other classes and the Honors College offers some classes that are not available to other students.

There are many things the Honors College offers (funding for summer experiences, research experiences, different study abroad programs, etc.) that he hasn’t participated in (yet) but he has friends who have and they thought they were great.

He and his friends think being in Honors makes going to Clemson even better.
