  • Filipino, gay
  • 4 years varsity girls soccer
  • 2 years of publications (student art collective)
  • published author in award winning school magazine
  • 3 years volunteer with a nonprofit for underprivileged children in Los Angeles (United in Harmony)

  • 4 years of creative writing -2 years of ceramics -5 years of Spanish (Spanish literature level)

What’s your unweighted GPA? That’s more important than your weighted GPA as it gives us more context. I’m going to be honest: even a 3.74 unweighted GPA would be a tad low for a school like Tufts. Try to bump that ACT score up a couple points. This year’s average ACT for accepted students was 33. Being Filipino nor being gay will help you in the college process unless either can bring some sort of compelling narrative to your application. Your extra curriculars are also somewhat underdeveloped. However, that being said, Tufts puts a lot of emphasis on its supplements, so if you rock those, you can still get in. I would qualify it as a high reach for you, just as it is for most people. Good luck! Maybe I’ll see you on campus come next fall.

My final grades just came in- finished with an unweighted 3.9, weighted 4.02 and I retook the ACT, hoping for a 33-34. Does this change anything?

@calijunior22 Just came from your other thread. Good job on the GPA bump. As for the ACT, nothing can be said for sure until scores officially come out, but if you did get a 33 or 34 you would be good there. Being Filipino will help, contrary to what the other poster said. URM status gives a negligible boost to your app, but it’s a boost nonetheless.

You can perhaps incorporate your sexuality into a supplement, as the other poster suggested. That will give you another unique edge.

@mg29409 although being Philipino may seem to fall into the URM category, it actually doesn’t, and falls into the Asian category instead. Thus, it will not give a boost to the poster’s application in the way that it would give a boost to an actual URM applicant.
