Chances of Getting into UPenn ED 2018

Hey guys,
Ive been thinking of doing UPenn CAS ED this upcoming year. I will be a senior in my fall, so what do you think my chances are? Btw, Im an Asian male from Florida.

Here are my stats:

SAT: 800 M, 710 CR, 750 W, 2260
SAT II: 800 math II, 760 Bio m
GPA : 8.0 Weighted, 3.96 / 4.0 Unweighted
Rank: 1
IB courses: HL math, bio , english, SL chem, spanish, history
Awards: AIME 1X, Sci Oly states 1st place anatomy and physiology, National History Fair - County 2nd place, several MAO states/regional awards - top 20 , National merit semifinalist, AP scholar with distinction

EC's: Founder/Pres. of Red cross club, Sec / Pres of MAO, founder of USABO club, NHS, Spanish NHS, Captain / #1 for tennis, Violin for 6 years/Orchestra in school for all 4 years
Volunteering- ~500 hours at MOSI, Red Cross, library
Job: work as Kumon instructor

Also, what do you think my chances are at other schools like:
Harvard
Princeton
Columbia
UChicago
Duke
JHU
Rice

Thanks guys!!

That’s a lot of great stuff to put on your college apps! Especially all the awards. The SAT scores are a little imbalanced, but I think your strong SAT IIs make up for it. I say Duke, Rice, and JHU are all reasonable matches. As for the rest, low reach, which is better than the chance that most people have. Helps to be valedictorian. Good luck.

Haha thanks !! Im prolly gonna retake SAT in Oct for 2300+ . Also, I will try to make the PUMaC team for Florida in November. Other than that, everything else will prolly stay the same.

@mynameismott, Are you in college right now? If so, which one?

So what do you think my chances are of getting into Upenn and Duke ?

Gee your school really inflates the GPA doesn’t it, I’ve never seen a 8.0.

Anyways,

Upenn: Reach
Duke: Reach

Do something that really stands out! Good luck!

Actually not, I’m a rising senior too. And yeah, didn’t know that about Duke. Oops. But I have seen a couple people get into UPenn and Cornell with similar stats/ec’s/etc.

@Achilles09 Yeah, the reason I have an 8.0 is because I took a lot of extra courses in supplement to my regular courses at school.

And @mynameismott, Really?! I hope I get in as well then.

I think I finally decided to do ED UPenn CAS though. I plan to become a surgeon when I grow up.

I wish I had found out about the Olympiads like USAMO, USABO , and USNCO before junior year though, so I could’ve prepared more for them and possibly made USAMO.

At least you found out about them. I should have figured they existed, but I didn’t know about them until I started looking at College Confidential this summer…

Achilles09, how are this reaches for him? If so, then I have to be truly worried. He had great grades, SAT’s, and extracurriculars. He might not have anything that stands out, but upenn and duke aren’t that hard to get into. I know a lot of people with fewer accomplishments who got in.

I do acknowledge that there are people with lower stats than the OP that got accepted. However, I have also witnessed cases where some candidates with similar or even higher/better stats that the OP got rejected.

An example for Duke, from the Official Duke Univeristy Class of 2017 RD results:

*Keep in mind that this person was an Asian applicant

Decision: Rejected (I assume it was CAS since this poster’s prospective major was “Pre-Med”)

• Weaknesses:
• Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
• Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
General Comments: Accepted in GWU, BU; WL in uchic, rejected in MIT & DUKE

Similarly, for UPenn ED, I have another example of a highly qualified applicant who got rejected:

Decision: Rejected - CAS

Objective:
• SAT I (breakdown): Didn’t take

• Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Legacy (grandpa attended)

Reflection
• Strengths: Recommendations, ACT score, maybe senior year curriculum
• Weaknesses: rest of high school curriculum was kinda weak, even though I got good grades, maybe volunteering?
• Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: weak curriculum freshman-junior year, nothing to make me stand out
• Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Nowhere yet

General Comments: oh well, pretty bummed but hey congrats to everyone who got in

It’s just impossible to predict acceptances to such highly selective colleges.

I understand. But OP did seven IB’s (basically equalivent to AP’s) while the examples you showed did 1 and 3.

No, they did 3 and 4 (plus one self study), respectively. Also, there is a possibility that both these applicants took the most rigorous classes that were offered by their school. If you still don’t believe me, here’s another one for Duke that got waitlisted.

Decision: Waitlisted

Pick one:

Trinity College of Arts and Sciences

Weaknesses:Not sure
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Harvard , Yale, Stanford, Columbia, Johns Hopkins, GT (Accepted), UGA (Accepted)
General Comments:A bit surprised. If I didnt do well at Duke, then I certainly wont have a shot at the ivies, but you have to keep pushing through when life gets you down. Congratulations to everyone who was accepted!

Now I’m not saying that the OP has no chance of acceptance. I believe that he is a highly talented person that will be very competitive when compared to his fellow applicants and will be very possibly accepted to some top schools, but I cannot guarantee an acceptance.

@theanaconda , haha thanks a lot.

@Achilles09, I agree that those students were qualified, but I don’t think they really showed a lot of initiative. Whereas in my case, I founded clubs at my school such as the Red Cross Club, 2nd biggest in the county, and USABO as well.

Also, I was just wondering if it makes any difference that an African American girl from my school who is a legacy with mediocre stats will also be applying ED to UPenn CAS? Will that hurt my chances in any way?

Bumpp 10char

these schools are low reaches for everyone at bext! you EC and grades are superb, SAT is slightly low for top schools, if u get it up to a 2300+ then i would say u have a low reach
for UPenn.

chance back!
