Hey everybody! Im a junior and I really want to get into UT austin,I was wondering what my chances are.

Im in the top 16% of my class

4.4 GPA

I live in Texas

SAT -1850
ACT- Havent taken yet

Ive taken atleast 3 AP/Honors classes every year, Im currently in AP history and Ap/Dual credit english. I will be taking both of those AP tests to get the college credit and ill do the same for next year. Ive challenged myself throught high school with hard classes and im pretty sure if i had taken one less each year i would be in the top 10 without a doubt.

Im not really sure what all UT looks at concerning EC but here are some

Extras:
Eagle Scout
NHS officer
3 years of football
1 year of golf
2 years of track
1 year of band
Countless services hours
Various leadership awards in Scouts
Worked 3 of my 4 years of high school
Tutor students every Tuesday and Thursday
Read to elementary students every Thursday morning for the past 2 years
(sorry if some of these dont matter but I just want to make sure to include everything i can think of at the moment)

I want to be realistic with myself and my parents constant reassurance of "you will get in don’t worry" is nice but i want some nonbiest opinion.

I’m trying really hard and expect my rank to improve, UT has been my dream college since I was a kid so I don’t know what i would do if I don’t get in lol.

Problem you face is top 10% rule – Texas must accept any student from Texas that applies who is in top 10% of his class regardless of his test scores. That has led to 70% to 80% of those being admitted falling within that rule, thus lowering chances of anyone outside top 10% from getting in – not impossible but you have severe competition for remaining seats. Get into the top 10% by end of this school year (they only go by grades through junior year) and your chances obviously improve exponentially.

State senate has passed bill to cap the top 10% rule admittees to no more than 60% of the class but house has not passed it and doubtful it will.

The SAT score and the GPA don’t seem to match. I would definitely apply to A&M and some other schools. You should take the SAT again. I think you will get into UT but not 100% on that so I would start thinking about contingency plans. Also think about out of state schools, LACs etc.

Im pretty sure the State senate passed that bill about capping the top 10% like almost positive, ive followed that very closely.

Ive been told its extremely hard to get into the top ten percent at this point, id have to improve by at least 25 spots and i do go to a very academically competitive school but im trying my best!:)

As for my SAT scores not matching my GPA? Im do plan on taking it a couple of more times but I dont consider that a bad score although it could improve.

Anyways thanks for your comments and id appreciate more!

With the top 10% filling up most of the class even private school students ( like where there is no ranking) with a perfect 4.2/4.2 GPA (UW) that get accepted to Columbia got capped this year. Its hard if you aren’t in the top 10%. :/

ya i really wish i would have known how important freshman year is, but o well by the way I dont know if you all have heard about the proposed bill about capping top 10% admissions. It says they would only fill up 60% of thier freshman class with top 10% so that could help me.

If I dont get accepted, what about going to UTSA or UTD for a semester or year then transfering? If I do transfer could i still get into any major i wanted such as business(I know the business school is hard to get into) if i had the GPA and what not?

Going to UTSA or UTD and getting the requisite gpa will allow you entry to general liberal arts only. the more competitive schools like engin and business are tougher to get into as a transfer or an incoming freshman.

One option is to look into schools within ut that don’t reach capacity by filling with top 10% - they then have the discretion to fill their incoming class with qualified non-top-10%ers. I was told this by an alum who is active in recruitment.

So what does this mean? I would have to major something that wasnt my first choice? As much as I love UT and dream about going there, I want to be able to major in what i want to major in you know? Its my future and the rest of my life so im not going to compromise just for four years. Dont get me wrong UT is still my first choice and dream if i get in but if i dont get in out of high school and have to go to UTSA or UTD then will i ever get into the McCombs school of business? Im not 100% sure this is what i want to do yet but I dont want to be limited

Here’s a very important tip. APPLY EARLY! REALLY early! When UT fills their class, they won’t let anyone else in, even if they apply before the deadline, even if they’re well into the 10 ten percent of their class. Like one of my friends, who got into MIT and then got CAP’d. But other than that, definitely try to get your rank up to make it a little less stressful for you. And since you’re not sure if you will be able to get in (that dumb top 10% rule’s a killer), find another school that you would be just as happy at that you know you’ll get into so you have options. Good luck and hook 'em!

So the senate just revised the top 10% rule so that universities can only admit 75% of their incoming freshman class through the top 10% rule… that’s great and all but the problems is it takes affect in 2011 and i graduate in 2010=(I was REALLY hoping that something would be changed this year and now I feel that it will be even more difficult to get in based on that 86% of UT’s freshman class last year were top 10 kids and it will only go up. Anyone words of wisdom? O by the way I won the position of NHS officer(treasurer) and received an honors award for chemistry, just some extra stuff to put on my application. Anyways what do you all think?

Im from TX too and my schools Salutatorian never took any AP courses
in my school Ap courses are ten times harder than regular classes, shes planning on going to DeVry aint that pathetic.
Now the people that did take Ap courses like our valedictorian and others (including my brother)are going to places like (brown), stanford, mit, emory, uni of chicago, and notre dame

Man i feel ya on that one. Im in texas, and im just out of top 10%. If you improve your SATs and write great essays i think you’ll get in. Are you going to the honors colloquium thing there?

Im taking the SAT tommorow and hope to get a 1900 or better. Ive gotten 4 recomendations letters so far and plan to write some very good essays(writings my strength). No i dont plan to do the honors colloquium

Report cards just came out and im am not in the to 15.01% and i suspect we will be 3 more kids next year so i believe i will be in the top 14%. I also took the SAT today and based on my scores form my TestMasters class i took i suspect that i will make a 1900. Considering these new factors what do you all think?

Also I will be a senior next year, Ive already had teachers and counselors write college recomendation letters for me, I was wondering which report card/trascript I will be sending to colleges. Will it be the one i just got where im in the top 15.01% or can i request one at the begining of the year when we might have more kids? The deadline for admissions isnt till december

^^^wow disregard that(it was really late at night and my grammar was horrible)

UPDATE!
