Chances of Getting Into UW - Madison

I'm a junior right now. My unweighted cumulative GPA is around a 3.3, and my weighted GPA is only marginally higher (I've only taken one weighted course thus far - anthropology). My GPA first semester of this year was about a 3.6. I got a 28 on the ACT, but only a 7 on the writing section, which I am a little worried about. My courseload is not overwhelming, as I said I have only taken one weighted course thus far. Next year I will take AP Stats, along with another weighted course (not AP). I will finish high school with three years of Spanish (II, III and IV). I'm considering whether or not to take a fourth year of science (that would be physics, I have taken integrated science and biology and I am currently in chemistry). As far as extracurriculars, I joined the student newspaper second semester of sophomore year and I am going to continue with that throughout high school (actually get a half credit per semester for that). I will be a four year soccer player. I've also had a job since October 2013 and plan to keep that throughout high school. I plan on racking up some volunteer hours before I apply, and I should be able to write some pretty darned good essays. With all this being said: firstly, what do you think of my chances? Secondly, what can I do to improve them (other than improving my GPA, of course)? Is a fourth year of science extremely important? I'd greatly appreciate any kind of feedback you might have.

Are you instate? If so I’d say it was a high match, if not, a low reach. Maybe think about the essays over summer. I’m pretty sure they stay the same.

I got in with three years of Science.

Yes, I am in state. Might I ask what sort of GPA/ACT scores and such did you have?

Anyone else have any input?

bump

Your ACT is about midpoint for enrolled freshmen, but your GPA is very low for UW, I’m sorry to say. It’s great you have an upward trend, but not sure if that will be good enough.

Look at item C11 in this document:
http://apir.wisc.edu/publisherssurvey/CDS_2013-2014.pdf

Only 0.7% of enrolled freshmen have unweighted GPA of 3.24 or below and 10% are between 3.25 and 3.5 (with most of them at the upper end of the range, presumably. That is for enrolled, not admits, but the higher stats admits have a tendency to go elsewhere, using UW as a safety, so the numbers for admits are even lower %ages at your GPA level. Yes, raise your GPA if you can.

It sounds like you have lots of good activities to report. Perhaps there is something outstanding there that sets you off from the crowd?

You can apply to UW, but be sure to have a couple of other schools you are applying to as well that are good alternatives. As in- certain to be admitted, financially affordable, and places you would be happy to attend.

Should I be worried about a 7 on the writing section of the ACT?

Its a low reach because you are instate. If you have good EC’s I think you will make it. Your GPA is hurting you though.

It’s a reach, but I still encourage you to apply. Maybe a low reach because in state. Look into applying to Indiana-Bloomington if OOS is an option. Its a school I applied to and I know people who go there, its great. There’s lots of team spirit, greek life, and its regarded as one of the best undergrad business programs in the country (which gives the school prestige). Best of luck.
